CIRM awards $8 million to Supports Groundbreaking Gene Therapy for AML and MDS 09/23/2024

Each year, around 20,000 Americans are diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of cancer that originates in the bone marrow and rapidly spreads to the bloodstream. Many others are affected by myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), which disrupt the formation or functioning of blood cells.

CIRM has awarded $8 million to Rochelle Emery, MD, at Senti Bio to advance a clinical trial for a novel therapy targeting AML and MDS.

This new therapy utilizes gene-modified natural killer (NK) cells to help fight these cancers, offering a durable and effective solution to increase life expectancy for patients with recurring or relapsing AML.

The Cell & Gene Therapy Workshop: CMC Development and Patient Access, hosted by California Life Sciences - CLS and CIRM, was a day of learning and brainstorming about the bright future of cell and gene therapies.

Dr. Deepak Srivastava, president of the Gladstone Institutes, started the day by discussing the opportunities and challenges of translating scientific insights on cardiac diseases into cell and gene therapies for patients.

Dr. Paolo Gargini, Chairman of IRDS and former director of technology at Intel, provided insights from the semiconductor industry on the value of linking forward-thinking with sustained collaborative problem-solving to advance manufacturing.

Throughout the event, expert speakers provided practical tactics for navigating FDA requirements, raising funds, and generating evidence to overcome patient and market access barriers for cell and gene therapies.

CIRM $4 million awarded to support innovative Gene Therapy for Rare Heart Disorder 09/16/2024

CIRM awarded $4 million to support the development of a one-time gene therapy for desmoplakin gene variant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (DSP ACM).

This funding supports Deborah Ascheim, MD, and her team at Rejuvenate Bio in advancing RJB-0402, a therapy designed to address the root causes of DSP ACM.

DSP ACM arises from a mutation in the DSP gene, leading to irregular heartbeats and potential heart failure over time. RJB-0402 uses AAV8 to deliver the gene responsible for producing the FGF21 protein, which supports heart function and mitigates issues common in DSP ACM. This award will help transition the therapy into clinical trials, providing a new treatment avenue for patients in need.

CIRM would like to honor the contributions of Fred Fisher, MSW, LCSW, a dedicated member of our Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (ICOC) governing board and an enthusiastic patient advocate. Fred passed away this week.

Fred joined the CIRM ICOC as the ALS patient advocate in June 2021 and held various roles during his tenure, including co-chair of the Standards Working Group and member of the Application Review Subcommittee, Task Force on Neuroscience and Medicine, Presidential Search Subcommittee, Facilities Working Group, and Grants Working Group.

In addition to his enthusiasm for CIRM’s mission, he had an unwavering commitment to advancing research to find treatments for patients and people living with neurodegenerative diseases.

For over 20 years, Fred served as President Emeritus of the ALS Network, an organization dedicated to finding an effective treatment and cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Additionally, he had over 35 years of experience leading non-profit social service and health organizations, including those serving children, families, seniors, high-risk youth, and individuals with mental health issues.
