Do y’all have “All the Stars and Teeth”? Goodreads keeps telling me I’ll love it but I keep forgetting to look when I get mesmerized by other goodies 🤗
Are you doing anything for cyber Monday? Would love to support the store from VA.
Thank you for hosting the Lowcountry Murderinos (and others!) at the SSDGM book release last night! Food from Basil, wine and beer, hometowns, and murder trivia WITH handmade prizes?! You ladies rocked this event.
Eeeeek!
You guys have LONG LIVE THE TRIBE OF FATHERLESS GIRLS by T Kira Madden?
Can't wait to meet all of you!
Hannah Casey have you been here? Where Orange Spot used to be.
Is there a summer reading program for kids this year?
Loved meeting Julia and Olivia today at Two Blokes ... we will see you AGAIN soon!
Would you be interested in accepting pre-owned books in good condition? If so, please message me. I am looking to give them away but don't want to give them to someone who will just throw them away. Some are hard back and some are paperback.
She was up all night reading. Thanks for the suggestion Itinerant Literate. She is ready for another Dory book. We will be back!

Good evening, folks! Christen writing to you tonight from the halls of a French sanitarium in 1895; or at least I feel like I am because I’m reading Victoria Mas’s debut, The Mad Women’s Ball. Now, that probably doesn’t sound like the kind of place one wants to find themselves, but reading this book you’re in good company. This book, translated from French, is a slip of a thing but packs a punch of atmospheric storytelling steeped in research and seriously inspiring (as well as insidious) characters.

Our story takes place in France’s notorious Salpêtrière Hospital, a women’s sanitarium, where the patients are treated more like side-show features, especially at a yearly ball where all of Paris is invited to watch the mad women dress up in fine clothing and dance. Against this backdrop we meet a patient who sees spirits and a nurse determined to help her, even though all she wants to do is escape.

Join us on Saturday for a local author signing!

Hilary Rose Bodiford will be signing her book Under the Influence from 4 to 6 pm.

Inspired by the author’s true experiences in the social media blogging world as @byhilaryrose, Bodiford’s first novel explores the dark side of this enigmatic industry in which so many women are mysterious CEO. Ingenious mean girls, emphasis on appearances and wealth, and the constant need to display a picture-perfect life are realities most every blogger has faced. Under the Influence brings to light how these pressures can affect mentally not only the content creator but also those who are watching. And they are always watching.

Happy Sunday, readers! This week, I’ve been diving into some historical fiction—at the Jacobian court, to be specific!

A Net for Small Fishes follows Frances Howard, the young and unhappy wife of the Earl of Essex, and her waiting woman, Anne Turner, whose sartorial and medical talents win her favor. These two women come together in hopes of improving both their lots but become entangled in much more dire plots than they bargained for.

I’m loving the history, the intrigue & politics, and the vivid setting Lucy Jago weaves together here. And the precarious relationship between Frances (Frankie) and Anne is nearly impossible to step away from. It’s based on a true story, but even knowing where it eventually ends up, I can’t wait to see how it gets there 😬😱

If you’re looking for your next great historical fiction read, mark your calendar for November 9, when this one will hit the shelves!

Happy reading!

Look who came to dinner!! *

*In cardboard cutout form*

Anyhoo, happy publication week to a wonderful new batch of books, including ~signed copies~ of #LetsDoDinner by none other than @antoni

Over a hundred new books and goodies out in the shop this week, including:

Richard Simmons Talking bobblehead

Strange Planet Activity Book by Nathan Pyle

Harrow by Joy Williams - Khristen is a teenager who, her mother believes, was marked by greatness as a baby when she died for a moment and then came back to life. But her mom has gone missing and the world is in an environment apocalypse.

The Mad Women’s Ball by Victoria Mas - The Salpetriere Asylum: Paris, 1885. Dr. Charcot holds all of Paris in thrall with his displays of hypnotism on women who have been deemed mad and cast out from society. Includes some spooky stuff!

White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson - The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out all about a teenage girl moving with her newly blended family to a picture-perfect home . . . that is hiding secrets.

The Family Roe by Joshua Sprager - A masterpiece of reporting on the Supreme Court’s most divisive case, Roe v. Wade, and the unknown lives at its heart.

Travels with George by Nathaniel Philbrick (LOL that cover, right?) - Does George Washington still matter? Bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick argues for Washington’s unique contribution to the forging of America by retracing his journey as a new president through all thirteen former colonies, which were now an unsure nation. Travels with George marks a new first-person voice for Philbrick, weaving history and personal reflection into a single narrative.

Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead - From the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys, a gloriously entertaining novel of heists, shakedowns, and rip-offs set in Harlem in the 1960s.

Blob by Anne Appertains - A humorous picture book featuring a blob (n. a creature that can be anything they want) who finally finds out who they really are after a series of small discoveries.

Our Story

A love letter to our customers on the eve of our storefront grand opening on July 21, 2018.

“Books are uniquely portable magic.” - Stephen King

For the past two weeks, we have been spending an unseemly number of hours at 4824 Chateau Ave. to turn it into a bookstore. We wanted to stop for just a moment to reflect on this huge turning point in our business and thank the people who got us here.

In many ways, Stephen King’s quote, which you may have seen on many a sign around the bookmobile, is not only a nod to our name and mission statement but encapsulates why both Julia and I fell in love with books in the first place. Books have always been at the center of our lives like ever-present and shining bits of the universe we could hold.
