The kola nut is a fruit native to West Africa, and it was brought to America by enslaved Africans. The kola nut was used in West Africa for its medicinal and stimulant properties, and it was also used as a symbol of community and in spiritual ceremonies.
The kola nut had a major influence on American popular culture that began in the late 19th century with pharmacist John Pemberton who developed Coca-Cola in Georgia, which originally contained kola nut extract. While kola nut extract is no longer a major ingredient in Coca-Cola, its influence on the iconic beverage is undeniable.
The kola nut is a reminder of

The Gullah Geechee are often omitted from textbooks. One of its youngest is sharing its history to TikTok. Akua Page's goal is to preserve and pass down as much history as possible so that her culture, which has survived for hundreds of years, can keep going.
A Gullah Geechee elder shared a story w/me about how his people would wrap his whole body in "Fever Grass" or "Fever Leaf" whenever he was sick. I'm thinking he talking about Elephant Ears since that's the only leaf in Charleston, SC I know of that grow big. Any ideas on what plant he talking about?

In SC, thousands of tenants are far from free as we live under greedy corporate landlords who hike the rent, refuse to invest in repairs and evict folks for no good reason, even after they've received sweet deals and funds from the federal government to stay afloat.
Tell the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) that we've had enough here in SC and that they need need need to enact tenant protections.

Did you know Riverfront Park was once a 100+ acre rice plantation? There's no historical marker or anything that acknowledge this history or the names of the individuals who were enslaved here.
Instead of waiting for it to be done I'm telling my Ancestors story.

Meet Viola Fletcher, a survivor of the May 31, Tulsa Race Massacre, who is now 109 years old and still fighting for reparations. She witnessed the destruction of her community and the loss of countless lives due to racial violence. It is time for our country to take responsibility for this horrific event and provide reparations to those who were affected.
Reparations are not just about financial compensation; they are about acknowledging the harm that was done and taking steps towards healing. The Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street, was a deliberate act of violence against Black Americans, and it has had lasting effects on Tulsa descendants. Reparations can help address these ongoing injustices by providing resources for education, healthcare, housing, economic opportunities and more
We cannot continue to ignore the past or pretend that it does not affect our present. It is time for our country to take action and provide reparations to survivors like Viola Fletcher. We owe it to them and future generations to acknowledge the harm that was done and work towards a more just society.

"I am not a descendant of slaves. I am a descendant of human beings who were enslaved."
How we talk about ourselves and our people matters--a lot. Enslavement is as old as humanity itself. Other groups of people were enslaved, including the Slavs, from whom the term is derived. But when their enslavement ended, they were able to enjoy a sense of belonging in the human family. The enslavement of African people was markedly different. Starting in the early 15th century, acting under papal authority, Portuguese monarchs began to “subjugate” African territories, “and reduce their persons into perpetual slavery.” The lie of white superiority and black inferiority, often erroneously justified by the Biblical Curse of Ham, was the instrument for making the subjugation of African people perpetual. The lie dehumanized Africans and consigned our people to a degraded status—not just for the period of enslavement. When enslavement ended, the lie endured. This is why, all over the world today, Black lives continue to be devalued. And this is why it is crucial for us, as a people, to be intentional about lifting up our humanity and the humanity of our ancestors--by freeing ourselves from the lie--once and for all. Join CHN to make this the Decade to Defy the Lie of Black Inferiority and Embrace the Truth of Black Humanity. Our children--and our ancestors--are waiting.
Peace,
Enola Aird, CHN Founder and President
