Last month, we celebrated one year of serving our community at Bon Secours — Harbour View Medical Center!

Leaders, employees, community members and community partners gathered to reflect on a milestone year of growth, innovation and success. Since opening, we've transformed our campus into a full-service medical center featuring private inpatient rooms, operating rooms and seamless access to emergency, imaging and lab services. Over the past year, we've cared for more than 38,000 people across 85,000 visits!

What makes Harbour View unique is the advanced technology that helps patients feel safer and more comfortable during treatment. With electronic whiteboards in each room to update patients in real time and advanced sensors that alert staff to potential risks, these additions ensure patients feel supported and connected while making it easier for our nurses to provide high-quality, compassionate care.

The Bon Secours — Hampton Roads Care-A-Van and Community Health Hub programs are transforming access to care by bringing health care, healthy food and support services directly into underserved communities. Serving neighborhoods across nearly 250 square miles, the mobile health model helps overcome barriers such as lack of insurance, transportation challenges, food insecurity and limited access to preventive care.

The integrated Food as Medicine approach combines mobile medical care, healthy food distribution, screenings, education and medication support into one coordinated system. Patients managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension can receive medical care, nutrition education and support for healthy foods during the same visit, improving continuity of care and reducing preventable hospitalizations.

The Care-A-Van Mobile Clinic reaches thousands of uninsured and underserved individuals annually and is supported by more than 60 mobile pantries and community outreach initiatives. On average, the Care-A-Van serves 160 patients per month while supporting chronic disease management, preventive care and health education across the region.

One family connected to the program through the Care-A-Van while struggling with diabetes, hypertension and food insecurity. Through ongoing access to healthy foods, education and support, they were able to make healthier lifestyle choices and improve management of their chronic conditions.

Looking ahead, Hampton Roads plans to expand mobile pantry services, strengthen behavioral health integration, increase bilingual outreach and continue building a connected community-based health ecosystem focused on long-term health equity.

Making breast health a priority is easier when care is close to home. Thanks to generous Bon Secours Foundation donors, Carolyn and many others can access life-saving screenings right in their neighborhood. Early detection matters — let’s make it convenient for everyone!

Carolyn Davis takes breast cancer seriously. She has lost an aunt and a sister to the disease and has a sister and niece who are survivors. She never misses getting her mammogram. And now, because of the generosity of donors, staying on top of her health is easier than ever.

“It’s very important to me because of the history of my family,” Carolyn says. “I receive a letter reminding me that it’s about time for my mammogram. I make an appointment as soon as I receive the letter.”

Fortunately for Carolyn, Bon Secours takes breast cancer seriously as well. Donations from the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Foundation have helped to expand access to care. Screenings are now available in satellite offices throughout the region. Carolyn received her most recent mammogram at a new office in Portsmouth, only five minutes away from her home. It means she no longer has to navigate the congested Suffolk area.

“I’m at the age now where I don’t really like driving in heavy traffic,” she says. “Now it’s very convenient for me.”

Bon Secours was proud to recently take part in the Portsmouth Behavioral Health Uplift Fair.

Visitors joined in our Mental Health Jenga activity by rolling a dice and pulling color-matched blocks filled with uplifting affirmations and words of encouragement. A special thank-you to the Portsmouth Boys & Girls Club for helping make the experience meaningful by adding heartfelt messages to the blocks!
