Tip Time!

Got Dahlias? It’s to dig up and prep the tubers for storage over winter.

Just remember to rinse, examine and trim them first. Let them dry out completely before storing them in peat moss, paper bags or cardboard boxes, ensuring space between each tuber and a decent amount of air circulation. #longwintersnap #happytubers #dormantdahlias

Generally, the best to prune is when the plant is dormant during the winter months, however, a light thinning or shaping can be done almost any time of year especially on shrubs that have uneven growth or on trees that need a little refining and dead wood removed.

Contact us! We are happy to help with this end-of-season chore.

Looking for something a little different to do? Consider Hog Pen Hill Farms in Woodbury!

Famed design guru and scientist Edward Tufte has long been fascinated by bridging the divide between data visualization both on the page and three dimensions. Hogpen Hill Farms is his personal sculpture garden where he builds his impressionistic sculptures out of mixed media and hard scientific data. The 284-acre farm with 5 miles of walking trails sits across from Tufte’s home and is filled with his imaginative and often surprisingly whimsical ever-changing creations. Admission is by carload so bring along friends and family!

Pondering plants this weekend? Consider one of these HFG favorites for good reason!

🌱 Magnolia virginiana – Sweetbay Magnolia
One of my all-time favorite small trees is the native Sweetbay Magnolia. This beautiful native tree has very few pest concerns and produces a heady, Gardenia-like fragrance. It retains its leaves very well in our climate and is tolerant of a wide range of soils growing well in full sun to part-shade environments. For more prolific flowering, I recommend planting in full sun.

🌱 Eragrostis spectablis – Purple Love Grass
For a phenomenal range of seasonal color and texture, I highly recommend Purple Love Grass. This 1' to 2' native grass has a soft pink inflorescence that when planted in mass, provides a very showy and soft texture to the front of a perennial border, along a pathway, or at the front of a meadow. It thrives in full sun and poor sandy and gravely soils. This grass mixes well with other native perennials including Bee Balm, Butterfly W**d, Asters, and Gaillardia to name a few.

🌱 Agastache foeniciculum – Anise Hyssop
For non-stop color from June to September, I recommend Anise Hyssop. This 2-4' lavender to purple bloomer provides prolonged color in a perennial border or native meadow. This powerful pollinator attracts bugs and birds alike and because it's a member of the mint family, it's naturally deer and rodent proof. There are many cultivated varieties available in our local nurseries, but the straight species is just as desirable.

🌱 Aesculus parvilora – Bottlebrush Buckeye
One of the best summer-flowering shrubs for a shady area is the Bottlebrush Buckeye. Its 8 x 8' size will readily naturalize a shady part of the garden while its soft and showy 6-12" long white panicles brighten up the landscape. It requires a fair bit of moisture when planted, but once established it will become somewhat drought tolerant and easy to maintain.
