Congratulations to Ghost Tours as they begin their 20th year haunting the streets of Newport, RI!

Pictured- a headstone at the Trinity Church Graveyard, close to the Spring Street fence, next to a large, brown obelisk bearing the carving of oak leaves and acorns.

The inscription reads, "GODFREY MALBONE Son of WILLIAM & DEBORAH HUNTER, Born March 7th 1772 and died the 24th of the same Mo."

The obelisk belonged to Godfrey's brother, William Hunter (1774-1849), a Federalist US Congressman, US Senator, and member of the RI General Assembly. He was appointed by President Andrew Jackson Charge d’Affaires to Brazil, elevated to Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary (a rank below ambassador but having full government authority).

Their father is buried with them, more famous, but with no headstone. He was Dr. William Hunter, born c. 1729 and trained in Scotland at the University of Edinburgh. He arrived in 1752 and on March 26th, set up a medical practice and apothecary called Dr. Hunter's Dispensary. His shop was located on Thames Street, across from the present-day Starbucks.

He married Deborah Malbone, daughter of wealthy merchant Godfrey Malbone, who happened to be friends of George Washington. At Newport, Dr. Hunter gave the first advertised lectures on anatomy and surgery in the colonies.

He was also an early patron of a young artist named Gilbert Stuart. The earliest known painting by Stuart was of two dogs owned by Dr. Hunter, and young stuart- just 12-13 years old- lived with Dr. Hunter while he painted the dogs.

As an apothecary, he created an elixir to help his medications go down easier- orange soda. It's amazing, but orange soda (and orange as a medication flavor) was invented right on Thames Street, just downhill from Trinity Church, where its inventor and his family are buried.

He also created 20 different men's colognes, which he sold to the infrequent bathers of colonial society. His cologne Number 6, was a mixture of orange and bergamot that was well-liked by his father-in-law's friend George Washington. Washington liked the scent so much that he gifted a case of it to his friend Lafayette.

It became THE scent of the Age of Enlightenment patriotic intellectual. Dr. Hunter's Dispensary changed ownership and names many times over the years before settling on its current name, Caswell-Massey.

Caswell-Massey's products accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and were popular (from Dr. Hunter's day on) with US presidents including George Washington, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, as well as first ladies Dolley Madison (who bathed in the cologne) and Jacqueline Kennedy (who used their avocado oil). Besides presidents, it was popular with celebrities including the Rolling Stones, Debbie Harry, John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Alla Nazimova, and Cole Porter.

Although his products were popular among Patriots, and although his son and namesake would become a US congressman, Dr. Hunter himself was described by Ezra Stiles as an "extreme" Tory. He died of fever while treating prisoners of war during the British occupation of Newport, on January 30, 1777.

First surgical lecturer in the colonies, patron of the first painting by Gilbert Stuart, inventor of orange soda, creator of the scent of the Revolution, and founder of one of the oldest businesses in the United States.

The oldest continuous business in the US happens to be the John Stevens Shop at 29 Thames Street. It was John Stevens III who carved the headstone of Godfrey Malbone Hunter.

At the apex of the serpentine headstone is the Newport Death Head, a specialty of John Stevens, Jr. and John III, a type of "winged death head" or "soul effigy."

In this image, you can see a winged co**se, the Angel of Death. The Grim Reaper's scythe swings across the figure, slicing an hourglass in two. Typically, the feathers on the figure's right wing point upwards towards Heaven, while the feathers on the left wing point downward, representing the belief that God sits on our right and Satan sits on our left. (Some of you may still remember the superstition of throwing salt over your left shoulder, into the eye of the Devil, whenever you spill salt.)

In Godfrey's case, as he was only 17 days old, he was considered innocent. The artist carefully omitted the left wing entirely, referencing the fact that this soul had not had time to be corrupted by the world. (In June, 1772, the Gaspee Affair would unofficially mark the start of the American Revolution, though there had long been riots and attacks by that point.)

The markings along the edges of the headstone repersent vines, the rebirth of the soul in Heaven.

This March marks 250 years since the short life of Godfrey Malbone Hunter, and 20 years of Ghost Tours of Newport.

Here's to 20 more years and thousands more satisfied visitors!

How do we think my buddy over at Brown University is doing? Does he miss us? Is he lonely? Does he think we forgot him? Also, is he related to my friend of a similar appearance who followed me around the cemetery on the Ghost Tours of Newport,Rhode Island in approximately 2002? Ghost Mom has questions.
