On February 7, 1953 “Dr. Doom” Robert Brazile was born in Mobile, Alabama. After graduating from Vigor High School in Pritchard, Alabama, where he was the Defensive MVP of the Alabama High School All-Star Game in 1971, Jackson State University recruited him as a tight end. In his sophomore season at JSU in 1972, Brazile switched from tight end on to linebacker. During his time playing for the Tigers from 1971 to 1974, the team had a 30-10-1 overall record and won back-to-back SWAC Championships in 1972 and 1973. In 1974, Brazile set the Jackson State school record for solo tackles with 129 and led the SWAC with 9 interceptions. Brazile was taken by the Houston Oilers with the sixth pick in the first round of the 1975 NFL Draft. Phillips' arrival in Houston also brought a change in the base defense the Oilers ran, switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. While most cite Lawrence Taylor as the prototype of the pass-rushing outside linebacker, there are some, including Bum Phillips, who say Brazile was the one who first made the 3-4 popular for sending an outside linebacker to rush the quarterback. Brazile found immediate success with the Oilers, winning the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award for the 1975 season. He was named to the Pro Bowl 7 straight seasons, was All-Pro five straight seasons (1976–80), and was selected to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 1970s. In 1978 and 1979, Brazile was a key member of Oilers teams that went to back-to-back AFC Championship games. He played his entire career (1975-1984) for Houston. He is credited with 1,281 tackles, the second highest total in Titans/Oilers history. In 1994 he was inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame, and a year later, he was enshrined in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. In 2003, Jackson State University inducted him into its hall of fame. In 2005, he became a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2007, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Brazile was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 4, 2018. (Photo Credit: Collectors Den)

Congratulations to SWAC Alumni Michael Strahan (Texas Southern) and Aeneas Williams (Southern) on their election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2014 on today.

Strahan was a Hall finalist for the second consecutive year. He played the left defensive end spot, was a five-time All-Pro selection and a seven-time Pro Bowler. He ranks fifth all time in sacks with 141.5, and his 22.5 sacks in 2001 set a NFL single-season record. Strahan was also selected to the NFL All-Decade Team of the 2000s.

Williams, who played for the Cardinals and Rams, was an eight-time Pro Bowl choice and a three-time All-Pro selection. Williams, who played cornerback and safety in his career, finished with 55 career interceptions, nine of which he returned for touchdowns.
His career interception total was higher than those of Deion Sanders (53) and Darrell Green (54), both Hall of Famers.

Two former SWAC players being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014 says a lot about the history and legacy of the conference.

SWAC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION TO HONOR LEAGUE LEGENDS WITH LEGENDS AWARDS AND ROAST

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southwestern Athletic Conference Alumni Association has announced its slate of individuals who will be honored during its Legends Awards and Roast here on Saturday, May 28, 2022, in conjunction with the SWAC Baseball Tournament. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park.

The Association’s Legends Awards and Roast event, held annually except for postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic, honors former student-athletes as well as former or current coaches, athletics administrators, staff members or coaches who have had positive impacts on the historic conference. Recipients are honored with the Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Charles “Chuck” Prophet Wagon Master Award, or the Dennis E. Thomas Distinguished Service Award, the latter being the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the Association. One of the highlights of the event is a roast, which pays homage to an individual (or individuals) who has distinguished himself or herself on a national scale.

This year, four individuals are slated to receive Lifetime Achievement Awards, including former Jackson State University baseball coach and athletics director Robert Braddy, current SWAC commissioner Charles McClelland, who also excelled as athletics director at Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University, former SWAC women’s basketball official Brenda Lawrence Pree, and the late Audrey Ford, who served as head volleyball coach at Texas Southern University.

The Charles “Chuck” Prophet Wagon Master Award honoree, given annually to a current staff member for meritorious service to a SWAC-member institution, will be LeChondia “Shon” Nelson, Mississippi Valley State University’s athletics travel coordinator.

The prestigious Dennis E. Thomas Distinguished Service Award will have co-recipients this year. Grambling State University football legends Doug Williams and James “Shack” Harris, co-founders of the Black College Football Hall of Fame, will be honored with that award.

Following the awards ceremonies, the fun event of the day will be the Roast, whose guest of honor this year will be the legendary Mississippi Valley State quarterback Willie “Satellite” Totten. A host of celebrities will “roast” Totten.

Tickets for the Legends Awards and Roast are $75 each or $600 for a table of eight. Checks, money orders or cashier checks should be made payable to “SWAC Alumni Association” and mailed to P.O. Box 5815, Birmingham, AL 35207. Electronic and online payments can also be made using PayPal at [email protected]. For questions regarding tickets and table purchases, please contact Alvin Moore at [email protected] or by telephone at (205) 222-1044.

Proceeds from the Legends Awards and Roast benefit the SWAC Alumni Association Degree Completion Scholarship, which provides financial support to student-athletes in the conference whose eligibility has expired and are within 30 hours of graduating.

HOUSTON MARKHAM (DEC. 20, 1942-JULY 17, 2019 07/28/2019

The funeral service for Alabama State football coaching legend Houston Markham was held Saturday July 27 at True Divine Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala.,

Markham was the winningest football coach in Alabama State program history with a 68-47-4 record in 11 seasons. He guided the Hornets to their only Black College National Championship and the SWAC championship in 1991 with an 11-0-1 record. Alabama State clinched the national crown with a 36-13 victory against North Carolina A&T in the Alamo Heritage Bowl in Miami. No SWAC team has ended the season without a loss since.

The only blemish on the Hornets' record that season was a 14-14 tie with Texas Southern. Among their victories was a 92-0 win against Prairie View A&M in which they set an NCAA record by scoring 50 points in the second quarter.

Markham rose to prominence as offensive coordinator on Coach W. C. Gorden's staff at Jackson State in the mid-1970s and '80s. The Tigers' vaunted Wishbone Offense was among the most prolific in the country and annually led NCAA Division IAA in rushing.

Markham was best known for developing offensive linemen. He played on the offensive line at Alcorn State, where he was tutored by all-time great Braves running back Jack Spinks, who was the first black athlete from Mississippi drafted into the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Spinks in the 1952 NFL Draft and converted him to pulling guard to take advantage of his speed and agility.

Despite his success at Alabama State, Markham was somewhat overshadowed by his larger than life coaching peers in the SWAC such as Eddie Robinson, the first coach to surpass the 400-win mark, Marino "The Godfather'' Casem, Archie "The Gunslinger'' Cooley and Gorden. However, Markham's peers held him in high regard. He was renowned for his hearty laugh, homespun and wry sense of humor. Robinson labeled Markham "The Quiet Storm'' because of his unassuming but highly competitive demeanor.

07/25/2019

The funeral service for Alabama State football coaching legend Houston Markham Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at True Divine Baptist Church, 4601 Troy Highway, Montgomery, Ala. Coach Markham died last Wednesday. He was 75.
In lieu of flowers, the Markham family asks that donations be made to Alabama State University Foundation/For: Football Program. Donations should be mailed to 915 South Jackson Street, Montgomery, AL 36104
