Take A STAND: A Student Activism Project 03/18/2021

Take A STAND: A Student Activism Project

Fare Share would like to thank all of our NNPS students who participated in our Take a STAND student advocacy project! Students from Richard T Yates Elementary School, Gildersleeve Middle School, Menchville High School, Denbigh High School, Warwick High School, and the NNPS Telecommunications Center used their creative skills to advocate for topics that they felt passionate about, and though some topics are controversial in nature, we could not be more impressed with their efforts.

Our presentation is now available to the public, and viewers may vote for their favorite submissions from elementary, middle, and high school up until April 1. Fare Share will make a $100 donation to the organizations chosen by the student with the most votes at each school level.

Donation links to each student’s organization have also been included on each slide, and donations can be made at any point if you feel led.

☀︎︎ “Take time to be grateful.” ☀︎︎
-
Taking the time every day to recognize what you’re grateful for helps keep things in perspective. Gratitude carries you through the tough times, and gives you the strength to surpass the stress of challenges.

Reflect on your family, your friends or the place where you live, and the satisfaction they bring you. Think about your health and your mental or physical talents. Consider the pleasure you received from a phone call with a family member or a laugh you shared with a friend.

Look back on small and large moments – the affection of a pet, your success with a project or a deep and fulfilling partnership. These are all things that nourish gratitude. And, gratitude makes life worth living!

Neuro-science research even shows that gratitude can work like an anti-depressant and can send a signal of safety to our brains.

Even when everything isn’t going well, gratitude reminds us of the good that lies next to the difficult.
So each day reflect on what you’re grateful for.

As you reflect on your moments of gratefulness, watch the following quick but great talk by Oprah Winfrey about keeping a gratitude journal.
And learn how physically writing down 5 things (big or small) each day that you are grateful for can have an enormous impact on your attitude and bring more of what you are grateful for into your life.

☾ Sleep is the best meditation. ☾
-
Today is Wellness Wednesday!!

How do you ensure a great night of sleep?

You’ve brushed your teeth and said good night to your family. If you’re like most of us, the last thing you will do before closing your eyes is plug your phone into the charger by your bed and take one more scroll through Twitter, SnapChat, Facebook or Instagram.
But, if you can change your ways and do that last check just a little earlier, before climbing into bed, it might make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a restless night.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲:

First, make relaxation, rather than communication, your main focus at bedtime because your body has to transition into sleep mode. To achieve this, keep your sleep area separate from where you socialize and work.

Next, power down your computer and make sure the room is neither too hot or too cold.
Also, aerobic exercise right before bed isn’t a great idea because its invigorating (though its great earlier in the day to tire you out later).
And don’t drink caffeine late in the day. So if you need an afternoon latte, make it decaf.

Now let’s talk about that cellphone! The screen’s blue light fools your brain into thinking it’s daytime, which messes with your body’s natural rhythms. If you get into bed and start flipping through your phone and watching TV, the trap of switching channels will stimulate your brain. Find the option on your phone to shut off the blue light.

And, one more thing at night, do you silence your phone alerts so that only a ring will wake you up?
Or does every ding, beep and buzz, even one at 3 am, bring your phone to life, rouse you from sleep and tempt you into a quick check to see what’s up – no matter how exhausted you are?
Set your phone settings so that the only way it’ll wake you up is if someone is actually calling your number.
A phone call at 3 am is probably worth answering. But an Instagram post? That can wait. And you’ll be in a better mood in the morning when you see it.

Sleep Great tonight!

♡︎ “Perfectionism is a state of mind.” ♡︎
-
As you pursue change in your life, there are going to be times when you fall back into your old negative patterns. It happens. When it does, most likely you’ll feel completely furious with yourself and consider giving up. But wait! Before you do anything drastic – think about it first.
Believing that if you can’t do something completely right, you may as well not do it at all, is at the heart of perfectionism. And this is something that’s derailed countless people trying to improve their lives.

Here’s the truth: it’s great to want to do something well; most people want to be successful. But that’s not the same as needing to be perfect.

If you’re expecting perfection, you’re almost bound to fail because when it comes to making significant life changes, there’s no such thing as perfection. There will be times that you return to your old ways; times you go a little off track. The real trick is not letting these times throw you completely off course. Regain your composure, and praise yourself for the progress you have made so far.

𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩!!

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: I have let go of my perfectionistic expectations.

☆︎ Sometimes finding the answer is as easy as taking a break and stepping back from the situation. ☆︎
-
Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in our thoughts that we wind up going round and round in circles, finding it difficult to concentrate, and because we are so distracted, not really accomplishing much. There may be signals--mental, emotional, and physical--that tell us we need to slow down and relax. It’s during these times that we need to STOP, step back from the things that occupy our minds and take time out to connect with our inner self, giving our minds and bodies the time they need to reenergize.
Spending a couple of minutes walking outside, meditating or simply becoming attuned to the rising and falling of our breath enables us to let go of our worries. This act brings our focus back to the things that are truly essential for us, such as our inner peace and well-being.

The following STOP breathing space technique is designed to be a short exercise to break stimulus-response patterns that can happen during high-stress times:
𝗦: Stop. Whatever you're doing, just pause momentarily.
𝗧: Take a breath. Re-connect with your breath. The breath is an anchor to the present moment.
𝗢: Observe. Notice what is happening. What is happening inside you, and outside of you? ...
𝗣: Proceed with something that will support you in the moment like talking to a friend.
