Recently, Jay Stolfi, owner of Rose Mill Company, was searching for a solution to better track workflow on the shop floor. Once the paper-based work travelers for a job went out to the shop, he lost the ability to track them and this was impacting the company’s productivity.
Looking for the Right Solution
Jay said it took some digging to find a solution that worked for his company. He wasn’t looking for inventory ERP because this is for a bigger business and his shop has relatively few products to track.
Initially he sought a workstation management labor tracking system. But he could only find options that were at opposite ends of the spectrum. Many systems were too robust, complicated and expensive and he didn’t want the complex set up time and training.
On the other end, he discovered many add-ons to the QuickBooks system he was currently using, that only covered basic operations without much flexibility. Jay needed something in the middle that wasn’t too complicated or cheap freeware.
The Solution Was eTraveler with Electronic Tags
Then Stolfi found eTraveler, which provides a simple, more accurate method for tracking system resources and performance at the same time. The electronic tags, called e-ink tags, replace traditional paper travelers on the shop floor. This makes real time communication from workstations and the office possible at the same time for updates, notes, changes in priority and inspection results.
Here’s What Changed for Rose Mill Company with eTraveler
The biggest change was much improved visibility of the entire operation. How long it took for each process to be completed on a job to job basis. They can now compare reports and cross reference them for all sorts of useful information.
They can plan better and be more efficient which positively impacts on the bottom line. For example, the team can now get an accurate assessment of the time it takes to process a job by looking at all operators and all jobs doing the same type of work.
eTraveler Provides an Accurate View of the Overall Operation
With all the information now available, management can drill down deeper to see how each operator and machine performs on the same job and sort data for each customer. Doing this allows the company to understand performance versus estimates to see if they are over or under charging customers.
The Transition from Paper Was Easy
Now, everyone communicates digitally without tracking papers or all those yellow sticky notes. When an operator types a note – that’s it! Nothing extra to enter into QuickBooks. Entering updates and notes is done one-time digitally at the tag or scanner and everyone can see the same data in real time.
The eTraveler Team Was Excellent
The experience with the people at Traveler was excellent. Jay worked directly with eTraveler’s owner, Scott Morris, to modify the system to fit his needs. For example, the system was adjusted to work with his QuickBooks accounting and tracking software. And, he found the team to be knowledgeable and responsive.
More importantly, the eTraveler team put in a lot of forethought to eliminate most of the bumps of introducing a new system. There were no surprises - the biggest benefit in Stolfi’s mind. Any new system will have hiccups, but the eTraveler team did their homework to minimize disruptions.
He was also relieved that the guys in his shop picked up the new system quickly because it’s easy to use. Getting people to change their work habits is not always a breeze, but the transition was minimal and anticipated. No unexpected weird things happened that you dread.
