It took me a day to find where the Chinese workshops are at ACTFL conference. The first day spend navigating and coursing through curriculum. I can’t wait to bring new content/knowledge back into the classroom. Surprisingly I also saw alot of propaganda of Chinese culture to the American public. Advocating from a poltical stand point. It feels a bit intrusive which I myself dont align with. We are all Chinese but is divided by how we were taught. I was raised in the US with a different set of belief system. I dont believe one needs to sell their culture and Knowldge. But I guess if one doesn’t advertise themselves how would others know. Cultural marketing. Many of the Chinese galas one find on centeal television is basically a giant culture commercial.

I also observe the divide between Taiwanese vs Chinese vs local and regional Chinese teachers. But I feel I dont fit into any of the sub category. I am a dual language learner who was brought up in the US education system. But have deep knowledge and understabding of the Chinese system. I’m really just sharing a part of me with fellow students and for them to have a fuller understanding of my culture and what it means to be bicultural. Having a clear unbiased understanding of the two. The next generation of Chinese parents really want something different. For their children to develop an interest to where they connect through the culture through the interface of the teacher. I’m more focused on using language as a vice for students to learn about themselves and of the world. Their social emotional health and communication skills. Really thats is the core of what langauge is, it’s an expression a tool an identity and a way of connecting with others.

Spoke to a Venezulan teacher about what it means to be truly dual language speaker who learned two languages simultaneously. I am an unique population of teacher of one where I would like to keep my Chinese heritage while being Chinese American. The two halves of me shouldn’t power struggle with each other but get along. I learn from both parts of me differently and am able to connect with others in dual culture. So I have learned a teacher like me is the most suitable for non native Mandarin learners. I like teaching styles which are universal.
