Hey NYC friends, the film I’ve been working on for the last 4 years is premiering this Friday 1/14 at Film Forum. Interweaving lecture, personal anecdotes, interviews, and shocking revelations, in Who We Are - A Chronicle of Racism in America, criminal defense/civil rights lawyer Jeffery Robinson draws a stark timeline of anti-Black racism in the United States, from slavery to the modern myth of a post-racial America. Emily and Sarah Kunstler directed this and I feel very lucky to have been a consulting editor, producer, and Director of Photography on this amazing project. I know it's strange times again with COVID, but if you are going out to theaters, please join us for the theatrical release of this film. Opening weekend box office is critical to an independent film's reach, especially an independent documentary about racism in America, so even if you aren't going out to theaters, please consider buying a ticket to a Friday or Saturday night showing to show your support. TREMONT, Bronx (WABC) -- At least 19 people are dead, including nine children, in a catastrophic fire that broke out at a high-rise apartment building in the Bronx Sunday, officials said.

About 200 firefighters were battling the five-alarm fire that started in a duplex apartment on the third floor of a 19-story high-rise building at 333 East 181st Street in the Tremont section of the Bronx just before 11 a.m. Sunday.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro says a malfunctioning space heater was the cause of the deadly fire. He says the space heater was being used to supplement building heat. Smoke alarms were operable.

🔊 Please watch and listen. ⁣

This is the gut-wrenching statement from Rogel Aguilera-Mederos after he was sentenced to 110 YEARS IN PRISON for a literal accident. Nobody even disputes that it was an accident. ⁣

God bless the people and families who were harmed, but this is just too much. ⁣

Please let me explain how outrageous this is. ⁣

This man, who was just sentenced to 110 years in prison:⁣

1. Was not drunk or intoxicated.⁣
2. Did not fall asleep.⁣
3. Was not texting and driving. ⁣
4. He wasn’t even eating and driving.⁣

HIS BRAKES WENT OUT. ⁣

He was driving a semi-truck full of lumber in the tough hills and mountains of Colorado when his brakes burned completely out on him.⁣

In an attempt to try to save lives he drove his truck onto the median to slow it down, but it still caused a horrible crash. ⁣

It killed 4 people. ⁣
Good people.⁣
Innocent people. ⁣

And this driver, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, has been remorseful from Day 1. ⁣

It’s the most extreme, outrageous sentencing I’ve seen in a long time. ⁣

Even the families of the victims said this was not what they wanted. ⁣

But here’s what’s crazy. ⁣
The JUDGE even said he doesn’t agree with it. ⁣

But that Colorado law is so bad with mandatory minimums, that they had no choice but to give him this much time. ⁣

It’s just outrageous. ⁣

Actual rapists and murderers, WHO MEANT HARM, aren’t given 110 years.

“I asked my son why did he name his Brand #NoLove he said that’s what young black man get from the world, and society: their lives are often dwindled down to a Benefit for a slave catcher who makes an arrest - youth are not valued in society & black youth and youth of color are even further down the list then that. We have to start lifting the bar of love for our young people and that begins with recognizing that our kids get #NoLoVe from the world. “- @new_ap.mouse @no_love_mouse

A Florida man named Samuel Scott was arrested after he called the police to report that his car was stolen. The responding officers accused him of being the thief and arrested him, saying he "fit a description." Ah, the tried and untrue "fit a description" excuse. Police have been using that to lock Black folks up for as long as America has existed.
