Small businesses are the backbone of the economy but they’re also a top target for hackers. Nearly 96% of ransomware victims with known organization size were SMBs, often hit through stolen credentials or unpatched vulnerabilities, according to the Verizon 2026 DBIR.

Hackers aren’t always going after the biggest name; they’re often casting a wide net and looking for the easiest path in.

But should you pay? That’s usually the first question organizations ask when hit with a ransomware attack. And the answer isn’t always simple.

AI-assisted attacks are exploding as artificial intelligence transforms not just business, but cybercrime itself.

Cybercriminals are using AI to launch faster, smarter, and more convincing attacks than ever before. Recent reports show AI is accelerating phishing campaigns, credential theft, social engineering, and vulnerability exploitation at an unprecedented scale.

Attackers now use AI to:
- Create flawless phishing emails with perfect grammar and personalization
- Automate attacks in minutes instead of days
- Clone voices and create convincing deepfakes
- Impersonate trusted contacts, executives, and vendors
- Exploit vulnerabilities faster than security teams can patch them

The result? Attacks are becoming harder to spot and more successful than ever.

Remember: AI may create the attack, but human trust is still the target.

Think before you click:
- Verify requests through trusted channels
- Never approve MFA prompts you didn't initiate
- Be cautious of urgent or unexpected messages
- Report suspicious emails, calls, or texts immediately

AI can help defend systems—but your awareness remains the strongest line of defense. Have you encountered an AI-generated phishing email, suspicious voice call, or deepfake scam? Share your experience and help others stay alert.

Cyber threats are evolving fast and small businesses are increasingly in the crosshairs. With AI, attackers can now send highly personalized phishing messages at massive scale, making the risk greater than ever.

So what can small businesses do?

CRI Managing Director, Sasha Pailet Koff, had a timely conversation with CRI Director of Content & Certification, Craig Moss, about exactly that.

It starts with the basics: understand what data and systems matter most, know your critical operations, and keep key contacts—like IT and insurance—easy to access, even offline. Put simply, write it down on paper.

Because preparation makes all the difference. Be the your small business needs by signing up for the free Cyber Readiness Program: https://bit.ly/3LWpG1x

Phishing Friday Alert: Critical infrastructure is under attack

One of the biggest cybersecurity trends in 2026 is the sharp increase in phishing attacks targeting critical infrastructure sectors such as healthcare organizations, energy & utility providers, and financial institutions.

What’s alarming? Many of these major breaches started with something as simple as a email.

Cybercriminals know that disrupting essential services can create massive financial, operational, and even public safety impacts. By tricking just one employee into clicking a malicious link, opening an infected attachment, or entering credentials into a fake login page, attackers can gain a foothold inside an organization's network.

Why this matters:
• Patient records and healthcare systems can be compromised
• Power and utility operations can be disrupted
• Financial institutions can suffer data theft and service outages
• Critical services that communities rely on can be affected

Phishing Prevention Tips:
• Verify unexpected emails before clicking links
• Be cautious of urgent requests or scare tactics
• Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
• Report suspicious emails immediately
• Participate in regular security awareness training

Remember: It only takes one click to start an attack, but it only takes one informed employee to stop one.

Have you seen an increase in phishing attempts at your workplace this year? Share your experience and one tip that helps you stay safe online.
