Three carrier alliances are launching Asia-U.S. East Coast services that will increase capacity on the route by 6 percent, according to industry analysis report.
The new Panama Canal service follow recent West Coast port congestion that had led shippers to seek alternative, even on higher-priced all-water services to East Coast ports that in some cases are struggling to handle the increased volume.
At least three additional all-water services are planned, all focusing on the North China to USEC route. These new loops will all use the Panama Canal route rather than the longer alternative via the Suez, illustrating that the geographic advantage of the Panama routing becomes particularly apparent on services to Northeast Asia.
To be launched at the end of this month, the first of these new services will involve four of the five CKYHE partners, namely COSCO, Yang Ming, Hanjin and Evergreen, while K Line, the remaining alliance partner, has not yet confirmed its participation yet. The loop has been dubbed 'NUE3' by Evergreen and 'AWS/AWE-S' by Hanjin, Yang Ming and COSCO.
The service will kick off from Ningbo on 26 March with the sailing of the 4,211 teu Evergreen-operated EVER DELIGHT and it will call at Ningbo, Shanghai,Qingdao, Busan, Colon, Savannah, Charleston, Colon, Busan, Ningbo.
It will deploy nine panamax vessels of 4,200-5,000 teu, of which four will be provided by Evergreen, two by COSCO, two by Hanjin and one by Yang Ming.
This initiative will be followed in May by the split into two loops of the current G6-Zim 'SCE/NYE' combo service. This loop had been set up in October 2014, to combine the 'SCE' and 'NYE' services within the context of the G6 winter slack season program.
The revived 'NYE' is expected to call at Kaohsiung, Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, Manzanillo, Savannah, New York, Norfolk, Jacksonville, Manzanillo,Balboa, Busan, Kaohsiung, using ten panamax ships of 4,700- 5,000 teu. Zim is expected to retain its participation on the separate 'SCE' service, where it should contribute three of the nine panamax ships on the service, to call at Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Dachan Bay, Hong Kong, Yantian, Manzanillo, Kingston, Savannah, Charleston,Kingston, Manzanillo, Xiamen.
A third new service on the trade will come in shape of the FE-USEC segment of a new FE - USEC - North Europe pendulum to be launched jointly by CMA CGM, Hamburg Süd and UASC. This service will kick off in May, using 15 panamax ships of 4,200 teu of which nine will be provided by CMA CGM, five by Hamburg Süd and one by UASC. It will call at Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, Cartagena, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, New York, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Le Havre, Southampton, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, Cartagena, Qingdao, with UASC participation limited to the transatlantic leg of the service only.
Further capacity additions to the US East Coast could be announced, as freight rates on these all-water services have jumped significantly In January and February for example, the Israeli carrier Zim has sent
three of its spare 8,400/10,060 teu ships to the FE-USEC route as ad hoc extra-sailers. Zim could be thus be looking at adding a regular service on this route in mid-2015. Further to this, the 2M carriers Maersk and MSC have not yet unveiled any plans for the peak season and could thus be looking to launch a new all-water loop, adding to their two Suez routed FE-USEC strings. Maersk has also deployed several ships of 4,000-8,000 teu as extra sailers on the FE-USEC route over the last two months.
The introduction of three new Panama-routed Far East - USEC strings, requiring a total of 34 vessels, will provide a further boost in demand for panamax tonnage.
Even as some 20 to 30 ships are expected to be released from the transpacific route in the next two months, the supply of panama vessels is expected to remain tight over the summer:
While ships so far deployed as extra sailers, covering sailing gaps that resulted from the USWC congestion and accommodating cargo diversions to the USEC, are successively set free, carriers do find new employment areas for these panamaxes.
Twelve panamax ships of 4,200-4,900 teu are currently idle, including three aging 4,639 teu units from Hapag-Lloyd built in 1991-1993 (BOSTON EXPRESS, DRESDEN EXPRESS, PORTLAND EXPRESS). Two sister ships, HOECHST EXPRESS and ATLANTA EXPRESS, were sold in January to clients of König, while a third unit, the 1994-built PARIS EXPRESS, was sent for scrap in China.
