For 15 weeks, our Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care dementia care residents and Kingsborough Community College-The Best Community College in the U.S. students participated in an intergenerational program that wound up being far more than creating beautiful works of art together. Their time together sparked creativity, meaningful conversations and so much joy.

Thanks Brooklyn Paper and reporter Leocciano Callao for shining a spotlight on this incredible program, as well as to Association of Jewish Aging Services, Jewish Federations of North America and Sephardic Foundation on Aging Center on Aging and Trauma, a project of the Holocaust Survivor Initiative, as well as Sephardic Foundation on Aging for their support!

CUNY passes resolution rebuking censorship of virtual event with terrorist

CUNY passes resolution rebuking censorship of virtual event with terrorist It stated that social-media censorship went against the principle of academic freedom.

12/17/2020

You may have seen that, last week, the City University of New York (CUNY) Professional Staff Congress (PSC) International Committee passed a resolution condemning The Lawfare Project, along with several other Jewish organizations, for fighting against the presence of terrorism on American college campuses.

The resolution was a response to our work shutting down the San Francisco State University (SFSU) terrorist propaganda event featuring two-time plane hijacker and proud member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Leila Khaled.

This resolution was passed so that CUNY PSC could set up a committee and begin fundraising against our efforts to keep terrorists and Jew hatred off campuses. In doing so, this fringe union has declared war on the Jewish community.

But we have no plans to take this lying down. The Lawfare Project will be establishing its own committee dedicated to combating this radical element on campus.

The only thing this resolution accomplishes is exposing CUNY PSC for the anti-Semitic, terror-supporting organization it really is. Jew haters cannot hide behind "academic freedom" to conceal their animosity towards our community. We see right through it. This has nothing to do with academic freedom or freedom of speech. This is about hateful professors and their mission to spread lies about Israel and the Jewish people. And they don't care who they have to partner up with to get their message out—even violent terrorists. By passing this resolution, CUNY PSC has made it clear that it prioritizes supporting terrorism on U.S. campuses over the best interests of its own members.

Providing material support to a prominent leader of a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) is illegal under federal law. SFSU is currently under investigation by multiple federal agencies for its role in attempting to host this event.

We welcome the ire of corrupt, anti-Semitic organizations like CUNY PSC. It means we are doing our duty to tirelessly defend the Jewish community from discrimination. This attack has only strengthened our resolve.

Thank you for standing with us as we continue our vitally important work to combat the Jew-hating hypocrisy that has infected academia, and please consider donating to help us take our fight to the next level.

Island Funeral, N.C. Wyeth, 1938
"In this painting, Wyeth used an aerial view to depict people gathering for the funeral of the patriarch of a large and historic Maine lobstering family. Wyeth was inspired by the sight of boats arriving on the family island, each bearing mourners for the 96-year-old Rufus Teel. While Wyeth had painted members of the Teel family on other occasions, this painting focuses not on specific individuals but rather on the rituals of the funeral. Like Wyeth himself, his gallerist Robert Macbeth saw the painting as a major achievement of Wyeth's career and insisted on its presence in Wyeth's first solo exhibition in New York in 1939."

Here is Wyeth, N.C. Wyeth from the blockbuster show at the Portland Museum of Art last year. You can see more pictures from my blog on the show. Also of note......the classic books with Wyeth's Illustrations, Kidnapped, Treasure Island, Last of the Mohicans, and others, are newly published by Atheneum Books, in which all of the illustrations have been made new using plates from the original paintings, borrowed from the current owners. This has been a huge undertaking and results are just breathtaking, as you can see in the photos below of one of the books, James Fenimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans. I gave these out as Christmas presents to my family last year, and they already very treasured!

RIP Former Kingsborough Commencement Speaker And Friend of KCC.

Today we are saddened to share the news of Tony Hsieh’s passing.

We can only imagine what he would say if he were here to announce this to you all, but we envision his message would resonate that:

Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
Energy is the ability to bring about change.

Tony has given energy to so many people.

For those of you who knew him well, you knew of his childlike wonder; his love for experiences and relationships over material things.

Let us all feel Tony’s energy and use it to deliver happiness.

NBA Veteran Keyon Dooling Talks About
Mental Health

October is Mental Health Awareness Month and in recognition of Kingsborough Community College’s efforts to raise awareness about mental health, on Monday, November 9 at 3PM, the Blanton-Peale Institute & Counseling Center in partnership with KCC’s Office of Student Affairs, and Counseling & Health Services, will host a candid conversation with retired NBA player Keyon Dooling, “Let’s Talk About Mental Health.”

NBA veteran guard Keyon Dooling played for seven NBA teams including the LA Clippers, New Jersey Nets, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics; and served eight years on the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Board in various leadership roles throughout his NBA career.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mr. Dooling was recently appointment Assistant Coach to the Utah Jazz after most recently working as wellness counselor and mental health advocate for the NBPA. In 2012, Mr. Dooling was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from a childhood trauma and in 2013, retired from the NBA. Dooling believes, along with the NBPA’s Mental Health and Wellness Department, that mental health and wellness is at the core of maintaining balance between one’s professional, personal, family, and spiritual lives.

Since retiring from the NBA, Keyon has also become an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, certified life coach and author, releasing his autobiography entitled, “What’s Driving You? How I Overcame Abuse and Learned to Lead in the NBA” in June of 2014.

We look forward to you joining us for this candid mental health conversation. Stay tuned for details to register for this November 9 event.
