Bistro Ten 18 To Carry Copies Of The Right Bottle: A Simple Guide For Selecting Wine
On the corner of 110th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, you will find a charming little bistro serving up American cuisine. Those dining outside are greeted with views of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and even a sidewalk garden on Amsterdam Avenue, almost trying to disguise the cars passing by. The absence of any tall skyscrapers or buildings, on the Amsterdam side, allows for plenty of sunshine to be taken in; ideal when wanting to enjoy a day socializing outside or reading a book in the daylight.
The restaurant is separated into two sections. Inside the main dining section, you will find the rustic ambiance of an old Paris bistro, complete with bar and a few 2- and 4-seat tables. And there is also a rear dining area, perfect for accommodating larger groups and special events; the fireplace in the rear dining section makes for an intimate setting, if dining for two.
There are weekly specials all year long, including oyster specials, live jazz on Thursday nights, brunch and happy hours. All are listed on their website. Students of Barnard College and Columbia University receive their own weekly specials when they like Bistro Ten 18 on Facebook.
The happy hour menu is worth your attention: 2-for-1 drinks on a select red or white wine, a lager beer on tap and house drinks. Happy hour comes along twice a day: 3pm-7pm, and 9:30pm-Close. Thought it would be worth mentioning that Thursday jazz nights start at 9:30pm as well; 2-for-1 drinks during the show caught my interest. I helped myself to a couple glasses of wine; a Rhone Valley (French), red wine. It was a Grenache/ Syrah blend, giving way to mild tannins, medium body and a bit of acidity; if you have read my book, you know what that translates to. The white wine was a Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, which I did not try.
The food selection for happy hour is also appealing. They have a couple choices for sliders: (2) Bacon Burges or Salmon Burgers for $6; they’re worth it. I had the Bacon Burgers, but the Salmon Burgers looked pretty, damn good. They caught my eyes as the bartender passed me by, serving them to another guest. I was not disappointed though. The burgers (bacon, onion confit, chipotle aioli, Swiss) were juicy, with a hint of spice from the chipotle. Plenty of flavors are packed into these sliders, and then sneaking at the end is a little spice-flavored kick. Not necessarily spicy, but leaves you with a lingering feel of heat in your mouth; which doesn’t get intense, it just makes you crave more. Be sure to ask for their “Poppas” (homemade seasoned potato chips).
Maine Lobster Bisque-
When the Lobster Bisque comes out, you are presented with a big bowl, with a chunk of lobster and a dollop of crème fraiche. Then the bisque is poured on top. The aromas hit you first, and as you sip, the flavor of lobster is nothing short. Smooth and creamy, with a lot of body to it, and the crème fraiche giving the warm bisque a nice cooling contrast; this dish is something worth a return to Bistro Ten 18.
Seared Local Sea Scallops-
You get two nice-sized sea scallops atop some baby spinach and a potato rosti. The scallops were soft and moist, and had a sweetness to them that definitely catches your attention. The sauce was subtle with just a touch of saltiness, making it a perfect compliment. Listed as a Starter on the menu, this plate is a good way to start your dining experience.
