TEXAS AND BROOKLYN-BASED ARTIST MICHELLE MACKEY PRESENTS “FROM THE EDGE”: PAINTINGS ON POWER, SEPTEMBER 15th—OCTOBER 7th AT LORIMOTO GALLERY
For Immediate Release—On September 15th, 2018, Texas and Brooklyn-based artist Michelle Mackey will present a solo show of her paintings, “From the Edge” at Lorimoto Gallery 1623 Hancock St, Ridgewood, NY 11385.
On first glance, Mackey’s large-scale black and white paintings on canvas suggest the sublime landscapes of Ansel Adams and the dramatic contrasts of Hurley’s Shackleton Expedition documentation. But Mackey’s layers of brushwork, drips, and chalk lines create layers of action that go far beyond landscape imagery. Power - the incredible forces of the subterrain , "The kind of force it takes to liquefy rocks” exists as the thematic stratum of these paintings.
Mackey's paintings are observations of humankind’s fraught relationship with the power of nature: our power over it, and our lack of power in the face of it. “Even our efforts to preserve an idealized landscape bring to mind the myth of Sisyphus,” Mackey was struck by the efforts to dredge sand from the ocean floor to restore the appearance of Delaware beaches. That effort is epic, but also harmful and absurd . As her own nod to humanity’s hubris in trying to control environmental forces, Mackey paints strips of blue tape trompe l’oeil, as if they’ve been forgotten there by a painter trying to fight drips caused by the irresistible force of gravity.
The artist is a realist - these paintings were products of experiences and scientific research. Mackey traveled to Iceland and Texas to gather imagery for these paintings. There she conducted interviews with geologists and hydrologists about human interventions with land, and the ripple effect of those actions. She visited stretches of Texas desert that had turned into lakes because of mechanical failures in abandoned irrigation wells. And discovered that Houston is literally sinking: if the amount of groundwater extracted from reservoirs isn’t reduced, flooding in the city will continue to worsen as it sinks closer to sea level.
“The power underneath our feet is awesome,” Mackey says. “Geological time extends both far before us, and far beyond us. These are spiritual paintings that recognize the power beyond the immediate surface – both of the world, and of ourselves.”
This will be Mackey’s first show with Lorimoto Gallery. She has also held solo shows and exhibited work in New York City, Marfa, Dallas, Seoul, South Korea, and Berlin, Germany. And has been reviewed in Huffington Post, The Dallas Observer, Open Studios Press and others. She has written about art for ArtCritical and Culture Catch and also a faculty at NYU.
