Footsteps
Footsteps supports and affirms those who have left or are leaving ultra-Orthodox communities. My family shunned me and I had nowhere to turn.
Every year, hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men and women attempt to explore the world beyond their insular communities. These courageous individuals struggle to redefine their lives despite punitive reactions from family and friends, little if any secular education, a lack of experience with modern gender roles, and, in some cases, a limited command of English. Next week, the Footsteps team will come together for our annual Goal Planning Week. During this time, staff will focus on internal planning, cross-team discussions, and organizational reflection. This is an important opportunity for us to look back on the past year, assess our progress and learning, and plan the work and priorities for the year ahead. To ensure staff have the time and space to fully engage in this experience, most member programs, meetings, and groups will be paused throughout the week.

The 2026 Footsteps zine, Companion, features the work of over 30 Footsteps members. We can’t wait to share some of the beautiful art. This is the zine's back cover art, created by Charlie Lewin.
Charlie says: "I document the community I left as a way of processing the trauma I went through, but I also think that documenting the joy in the community is just as important. This artwork was inspired by Purim."
Thank you for sharing your art with us, Charlie!

Congratulations to Footsteps member Dodi! As she shared:
"This past year, I traveled to 5 different places doing adaptive sports. It was amazing to have the opportunity to do 3 marathons out of state and travel for rock climbing. I even got first place at Canadian para nationals. I was most proud of the determination and grit I showed in my sports."
Zalman Newfield was taught from a young age that everything from the world outside of Chabad-Lubavitch, including music or interacting with non-Jews, was potentially dangerous. Learn more about how he gradually reevaluated these perspectives in his amazing memoir, Brooklyn Odyssey.
If you want to learn more, please join for a riveting conversation between Zalman and Fordham University Dean Jessica Lang on Tuesday, May 26, at the Hunter College Roosevelt House, where they will discuss Zalman's experience leaving the Chabad-Lubavitch community.
