Passionate physicist who loves inspiring people with science! Entrepreneur, Speaker & TV Presenter in physics from Stanford.
I'm a physicist, TV host and Chief Data Scientist at www.thisismetis.com. I appear on Discovery on our show Outrageous Acts of Science (11 seasons out!), National Geographic and the Travel Channel. I'm originally from Mexico and was discouraged from pursuing a career in physics as a young woman. Many years later I became the first Mexican woman to complete a Ph.D. Here's my TV reel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsN0uw6wb4s

Help us Break Stereotypes about Science & Scientists in Classrooms!
Do you have a child in school who is interested in STEM, particularly in physics? I’m going to donate 10 inspirational poster kits to schools, so please DM me if you’re interested in getting one!
This effort is part of a new educational program called “I Am A Scientist” which has partnered with the AAAS - The American Association for the Advancement of Science' STEP UP program to unite a national community of physics teachers, researchers, and professional societies to design high school physics lessons and empower teachers, create cultural change, and inspire young women to pursue physics in college (https://engage.aps.org/stepup/home)
Here is my personal poster: https://www.iamascientist.info/debbie-berebichez. And there are so many more inspiring ones: Ayanna Thomas, Noor Al-Alusi, francesca dominici, Cassandra Extavour, Louise Nuijens. Here are Free Downloads and other materials: https://www.iamascientist.info/download-materials
I Am a Scientist wants to reach 10,000 classrooms. If you like the initiative and are inclined to help, you can get more kits distributed and continue to serve classrooms: https://lnkd.in/dvah2Bbz. Also, if you’re a student, please consider becoming an ambassador: https://lnkd.in/dnDWh9wS

Thank you, Latinas in Tech and for including me in your 🔆 Luminarias, virtual art exhibition and NFT auction, spotlighting 30 Latina Change Makers in Tech

This post is my first attempt at sharing the content of some of my talks. Let me know if you find this interesting and I'll be happy to share more.
Last week I had the honor to give a keynote speech at the video game studio Housemarque. They had a choir of a capella singers perform right before me, which was the perfect introduction to an inspirational 45min talk.
I typically speak about data science, AI, sensor data & quantum computing. But their request was broader: growth mindset and becoming a learning organization; impostor syndrome, proactive leadership, art and technology. And how diverse teams help companies create better products.
I titled the talk "A Wider View" to signify that to connect all these topics, one must take a wider view. The title is also a reference to video games scene that allow the player to see more of the context surrounding the main character.
The connecting thread I used was the life and ideas of Niels Bohr (1885-1962) who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1922 for the first atomic model to include quantum mechanics. Bohr wasn’t just a great physicist. He was also a great human being.
He provided temporary jobs at his physics institute in Copenhagen for many scholars fleeing N**i Germany and was also involved in the rescue of Danish Jews to neutral Sweden. He donated his Nobel prize medal to an auction that raised money for the Finnish Relief Fund to support Finland against Russia in the Winter War.
Philosophically, Bohr's principle of complementarity (two opposing views can live in harmony) was born out of a scientific concern: how to unify the fact that light acts both as a particle and as a wave. Bohr believed that this principle is useful beyond physics and can help us understand the world around us. In particular, he viewed that science and humanities are complementary and that the goal of both is to contribute to "the gradual removal of prejudices" which we all have.
Bohr designed his own coat of arms which featured a taijitu (symbol of yin and yang) and a motto in Latin: contraria sunt complementa: "opposites are complementary."
The talk was well received and I was glad the audience enjoyed it. And I'll share one more story: any years ago, I was in a second-hand bookshop in London when I found a book of Bohr's lectures. I opened the cover and saw that the front page had been signed by Bohr himself. I was electrified. Bohr had held this book! Of course, I bought the book right away. I still have it.

Today was my first visit to a Finnish spa. While I waited, I read a few pages of their signature book “L’art de la simplicite” where it clearly states that ‘elegant women should only wear black, white and at most beige colors” It suggests that “bright colors are disturbing to others.”
Here I am in my Mexican-pink shirt disturbing others 🤣

Are you curious about the future of computing? Many technological developments can be confusing to understand in the beginning. Think of artificial intelligence or data science which few people understood 15 years ago and now pretty much everyone talks about them as if they’ve been here forever.
To find out about the exciting new technology of quantum computing and its numerous exciting applications, watch our video series: "The Quantum Advantage." Our first episode explains what quantum computing is and is meant for a wide audience, which means it requires no technical background to understand it.

Deborah Berebichez, Ph.D. on LinkedIn: Qbits for Climate: How Quantum Computing Can Have a Gigaton Impact
This was one of the most enjoyable panels I’ve had the opportunity to participate in. Every single person in it was knowledgeable, insightful and a great communicator. And this is perhaps one of the most important topics of our generation: “how can we harness the power of quantum computing to combat climate change, now.”
I’m immensely grateful to DLD Conference, Steffi Czerny, VTT, Philipp Ernst, Jeremy O'Brien, Markus Pflitsch and Hildegard Müller
Qubits for climate – How can have a gigaton impact on decarbonization
The emerging technology of quantum computing could revolutionize the fight against climate change, particularly in some of the most emissions-intensive areas, including agriculture, industry, transportation, power generation or carbon removal. It could also help with climate adaptation by improving the prediction of extreme weather events. Even though the technology is in the incipient stages of development - the first generation of quantum computing is within range in the next 5 years. When it comes to climate change, quantum computing could help curb emissions that for the moment don’t have a viable solution, which would significantly change the economics of decarbonising as the fight to limit global warming enters a crucial decade. In this session we would like to provide perspectives on the decarbonization potential of the quantum computing, discuss challenges and concrete industry applications.
