We are thrilled to welcome back Amanda Weil to the Creative Time Board of Directors!

Amanda rejoins the Board at a pivotal moment as Creative Time embarks on a new chapter of artist-led public engagement and ambitious commissions.

Founder of Weil Studio, Amanda has spent more than three decades exploring the intersection of photography and architecture through large-scale photographic glass installations. Amanda’s artistic practice also includes time based projects, including PicAnHr - one photo per hour each September dating from 1986. Amanda is a New York State certified mediator, and also serves as the President of the Norman Foundation, which, in its vision for a more just and participatory democracy, supports grassroots organizing and civic engagement.

A longtime member of the Creative Time community, Amanda previously served on the Board from 2001–2024, including a nine-year tenure as Board Chair from 2006–2013. During that time, she helped guide the organization through a period of bold artistic experimentation and landmark projects, including Paul Chan’s “Waiting for Godot” in post-Katrina New Orleans, Paul Ramirez Jonas's “Key to the City,” and the traveling exhibition "Democracy in America."

We are honored to welcome Amanda back and look forward to her leadership, vision, and longstanding commitment to artists and public life.

Last week at CTHQ, we gathered for the opening program of “Toward Sanctuary,” “We Keep Us Safe: Sanctuary Movements Past and Present”, asking: how do communities create sanctuary and collective safety in the U.S. where so many are made to feel unsafe, and what does it take to build protection beyond systems alone? 🤝

“Silencing storytelling is one of the most pernicious things that can happen. The testimonio storytelling is what made the sanctuary movement in the 80’s. You don’t have a movement without the testimonios.” — Dr. Lloyd Barba

Through a teach-in led by Black Alliance for Just Immigration's Deputy Director Abraham Paulos, participants reflected on how Black communities in New York are already practicing mutual support and collective care, while sharing practical tools for protecting and supporting impacted communities.

Artist Cynthia Santos Briones and historian Dr. Lloyd Barba grounded us in the histories of sanctuary movements across the nation, tracing networks of faith-based organizing, migration, resistance, and community-led protection from the 1980s to the present day, alongside brief remarks from Diya Vij, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Across the afternoon, one thing remained clear: sanctuary is not only a place, but an ongoing collective practice shaped through solidarity, care, and action.

Deepest thanks to our guest speakers and collaborators, and to everyone who joined us for the first gathering in Toward Sanctuary, inspired by Guadalupe Maravilla’s artistic practice and upcoming Creative Time public art commission.

Join us at CTHQ on Wednesday, June 10 at 6 pm for our next “Toward Sanctuary” program, “Rooted: Cultivating Sanctuary in the Mind and Body” with TTA Healing Studio 🎐🌀

Reiki practitioner Savannah Schmidt guides an evening centered on embodied care, ancestral energies, and holistic wellbeing, reflecting on sanctuary not only as a place, but as an ongoing practice of tending to the mind and body.

TTA Healing Studio events invite you to using a combination of dance, somatics, and energy work to facilitate connection to community and to Self.

Savannah specifically engages with twerk as an ancestral technology that allows for deeper connection to Divine Source Energy (whatever that means personally) through the awakening of the energetic pathways that run through the hips, thighs, glutes, and lower back. Movement is paired with Reiki to encourage the body to release and rebalance energy as needed. In healing sessions, Savannah acts as both a conduit and an amplifier of healing energies, creating a safe space for release.

⏮️🪜📺For Lower East Side History Month, we’re revisiting Creative Time’s 2007 project “A Psychic Vacuum” by Mike Nelson, a sprawling installation that transformed the then disused interior of into a labyrinth of disquieting rooms and shifting realities.

Built from salvaged materials tied to the market’s history and the surrounding neighborhood, the work reflected a Lower East Side in flux while continuing Creative Time’s history of producing site-specific projects that spark dialogue around neighborhoods on the verge of change.

This May, in celebration of Lower East Side History Month, over 70 organizations across the LES have come together for tours, performances, exhibitions, and public programs honoring the stories and communities that shape the neighborhood. Organized by our neighbors and partners FABnyc, the month celebrates the Lower East Side–which historically encompassed the East Village, Alphabet City, Chinatown, Bowery, Little Italy, and NoLIta–as a longstanding site of refuge, mutual aid, and immigrant community.

We’re honored to be part of the Lower East Side community and its ongoing story. Explore the full calendar of at their link in bio.

Co-curated by Celine Wong Katzman and Dr. Gervais Marsh with Buffy Sierra, the series is grounded in the history of sanctuary movements in the US and Maravilla’s practice of building community-centered spaces for holistic wellbeing, and contends with the possibilities and limitations of cultivating sanctuary across legacies of public and socially engaged art.

A beautiful evening of sound, collaborators, and vinyl ❤️‍🔥

Earlier this spring, we gathered at Public Records to celebrate the release of "If you hear something, free something" by Chloë Bass, a public artwork in sound presented by Creative Time and MTA Arts & Design.

The limited-edition vinyl gathers the refrains once echoed through NYC subway stations during Bass's Fall 2025 public art project, alongside remixes by Bill Dietz and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste. Accompanied by a booklet of essays and an interview, the record is an aural archive reflecting on the possibilities for connection and recognition in the public spaces we share.

Special thanks to Hellbender Vinyl for pressing the and to public records for hosting.

🚇🗣️ There’s still time to bring a copy home. Grab your limited-edition vinyl here: checkout.square.site/merchant/NFY100BEM9J71/checkout/G4JN4FFOIQ3W7TTT7T3ZIL6J

𝑶𝒉 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕! ✨

Under the rosy glow of the Russian Tea Room, Creative Time’s 2026 Gala brought together artists, collaborators, friends, and supporters for a celebration of public art, community, and a bold new chapter ahead.

In partnership with Nordstrom, we honored Guadalupe Maravilla, Michelle Coffey, and Molly Gochman, whose practices continue to shape the dialogues, debates, and dreams of our time.

From cocktails to dinner to our iconic 𝑨𝑭𝑻𝑬𝑹 𝑯𝑶𝑼𝑹𝑺 𝑷𝑨𝑹𝑻𝒀, vibes were high, conversation flowed, and the dance floor was full. There were cymbal-clanging bears, glasses raised, and so much joy—but what stays with us most is the energy of a community gathering around artists and ideas that push form, take risks, and imagine new ways of being together.

We are deeply grateful to our Board, Co-Chairs, Benefit Committees, and all who made this night possible. An extra special thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies, Casa Dragones Tequila, and HOUSE of WARIS Botanicals for helping bring such warmth and spirit to the night. That spirit carries forward. As Creative Time steps into this next chapter, there is so much ahead.
