I think the necessity for us to be concerned is increasingly exponentially! The battle remains, however, to convince everyone that this is not their problem. (Yet I know living with this awareness can seem alot, it's not too much to be reminded - especially this Sunday when so many are running through our New York City streets and NOT drinking from disposable plastic bottles!

Environmental Personhood

This week’s NextGen Blog post presents a dynamic solution and model for today’s critical need to protect global freshwater resources.

"As the world’s lakes and rivers face increasing threats of various pollutants, some groups are trying to grant bodies of water the legal rights of people – a new approach to protect them. “Environmental personhood” designates human rights to a specific geographical feature, allowing legal representatives to sue polluters on behalf of at-risk environments.”

Happy #WorldRainforestDay! Rainforests can be lowland or highland ecosystems of tall, evergreen trees with high amounts of rain that are stored by lush vegetation and then released to form some of the world’s greatest rivers.

Some rainforests are over 70 million years old. In GUATEMALA’s Peten, Tikal National Forest is a lowland rainforest within Maya Biosphere Reserve where deforestation threatens scarlet macaw habitats. Originally it was a vast mix of lowland rainforest, wetlands, lagoons, lakes, rivers, and mangrove forests, supporting the great Maya culture, striped turkeys and howler monkeys.

Our Guidelines – No Water No Life

NO JUSTICE, NO WATER, NO LIFE.
During this time of reflection, No Water No Life believes it is all of our responsibility to speak out and take action against racial injustice. NWNL stands in solidarity with those fighting inequality, violence and discrimination. The connections between environmental issues and human rights are undeniable. NWNL has previously focused on a number of minority communities - from East Porterville CA to indigenous tribes along N America’s Columbia and Ethiopia’s Omo Rivers - that have faced unprecedented consequences of systemic inequality and environmental abuse. We now vow to use our platform and provide a voice to these underserved communities as clean and safe water is a right for all. Please visit the NWNL webpage for more information, link below.

Happy World Fish Migration Day! NWNL has followed migrations of anadromous salmon from the Pacific into Washington & Oregon's Columbia River, often via hydro-dam fish passages and into Olympic Peninsula’s Elwah River after removal of its 2 monumental dams - also from the Atlantic into NJ’s Lower Raritan Basin, recently facilitated by colonial-era dam removals. For centuries these migrations have fed indigenous communities and inspired artists. Today is a time to honor and protect these migratory populations, so interwoven into the health of our ecosystems.
