Dutch Culture USA is proud to present a new video about Dutch architects and architecture in the United States. Filmed by video journalist Daan Wallis, the video features a number of Dutch firms and their work in the U.S., as well as a number of American specialists who have worked with them to create signature projects in NYC and elsewhere. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N52ERuXnVc.

More about the video:

The Netherlands has had a big influence on contemporary architecture. With firms like OMA leading the charge, Dutch architecture has become a worldwide industry, with projects built in Europe, the Middle East and China. In the last few years, they have also left a growing mark in the United States.

Following a number of signature buildings by Rem Koolhaas in the U.S., many Dutch firms have followed in his footsteps, including Archi-Tectonics, Concrete, Mecanoo, !melk, MVRDV, Piet Boon, One Architecture, Piet Oudolf, SO-IL, UN Studio, and West 8. Some of them with offices in New York City.

They have produced signature projects throughout the country, including libraries, museums, apartment buildings, multi-use complexes, hotels, private residences, masterplans for parks, and more.

DutchCultureUSA spoke with New York-based architects Jerry van Eyck, founder of !melk landscape architecture / urban design, Winka Dubbeldam, founder of Archi-Tectonics, and Florian Idenburg, co-founder of SO-IL (Solid Objectives, Idenburg Liu) about their experiences in the U.S. We also spoke with Warrie Price, President of The Battery (horticulture masterplan of The Battery by Piet Oudolf), Susanna Sirefman, President of Dovetail Design Strategists (led architect search for Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library), and Anthony W. Marx, President & CEO of the NYPL The New York Public Library (renovation of Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, NYPL by Francine Houben of Mecanoo).

For this project, Inscape tasked us with developing a concept space that would offer an immersive meditation environment and allow the brand to easily scale to new locations. Working closely with the client and experts on the psychology of meditation, we designed a space concept that actively encourages a deep state of meditation through controlled sensory experiences.

Asian Games 2022 Park. Hangzhou, China.

Work on Asian Games 2022 Park is finishing up ahead of the opening ceremony on September 10th. We set 7 buildings into a recreational landscape that activates the entire site. 2 stadiums on anchor both sides of the site, connected by a pedestrian valley that passes under the road. Named the Valley Village Mall, this pedestrian spine is lined with shops, restaurants, cafes, kiosks, and outdoor gathering areas. To transition the park after the games, the design supports uses ranging from shopping to hiking, birdwatching, boating, outdoor concerts, and major cultural events.

Kyle—Kath Gallery, 2021. New York, NY

We introduced a concrete stair with a finely detailed banister made of blackened steel plates. At the top and bottom of the stairs, the steel plates bend 180 degrees, creating a continuous plane that guides visitors around the corners in one fluid motion. The ends of these plates are laser cut, leaving a reveal that showcases the construction of the handrail.

Entering the gallery, visitors are greeted by a new custom-designed reception desk and a bright red cube emblazoned with the Kyle—Kath logo. Kyle—Kath Gallery, 2021. New York, NY

Our recent project transforms Kyle—Kath Gallery’s Chelsea showroom into a contemporary display space that highlights their collection of richly colored and intricately patterned carpets. With a series of considered interventions to the existing space, the new design reshapes the visitor experience and enhances how guests encounter the art on display. A new storefront facade—made of ultra-thin black-steel frames, floor-to-ceiling glass plates, and a full-length glazed pivot door—opens the gallery to the street and allows passersby to glimpse the art inside. A projection visible through this facade shows how the carpets are hand-woven and knotted by talented craftsmen in Nepal.

Tribeca Duplex Penthouse, 2020. New York, NY.

For this duplex penthouse, we looked to the lifestyles of their clients—founders of
a boutique meditation studio—to craft a home that prompts the contemplative experiences they hold meaningful. The residence is designed not as a conventional apartment but as a “living-scape”: a series of spatial experiences and atmospheres that evoke different moods and modes of being. Each area has a unique character attuned to its specific use, whether play, meditation, relaxation, or socialization.

The lower-level dining area is a subdued and contemplative space characterized by a play of
light and shadow—a center of gravity in the home where the family comes together for formal
meals. A custom-designed dining table made from a live edge planed tree trunk anchors the

starkly geometric wood-and-leather chairs by Mexican designer Hector Esrawe and a

Programmatic Hybrids: Stadium/Theater Hybrid Building, Asian Games 2022 Park, Hangzhou, China.

This stadium/theater hybrid was designed to convert from a venue for major athletic events during Asian Games 2022 to a cultural destination after they end. Developed through a parametric design process, the building's form merges amphitheater and stadium typologies, allowing the venue to host both sporting events and performances like concerts, classical music, drama, and more.

Programmatic Hybrids: Leiden Hotel + Condos, Leiden, the Netherlands.

For this building, we linked the hotel and condominiums spaces with a mix of luxury amenities and community areas that serve both. The hotel lobby, champagne bar, conference center, spa, restaurant, and pool are fluidly connected with residences and allow both hotel guests and residents access. The design creates programmatic overlaps, generating a community anchored by generous services, lifestyle amenities, and open outdoor spaces.
