If you have experienced unusual large spaces in your wood floors recently and are wondering what's going on the answer often is very simple. Wood floors are constantly adjusting to the environment to which they are exposed. The relative humidity within the home should be kept between 35%-55%. If a floor is installed in the summer to fall months, the humidity will be on the high end of the scale. In the winter months with the heat on the floors dry out and sometimes the humidity levels can drop to dangerous levels for your health to as low as 15-20%. The floors will shrink and spacing will occur. Humidifiers will help limit this effect and also benefit your health. Have you awoke in the early morning with a dry throat and nasal passages? Low humidity is the cause.
The good news is that Spring is in the air and humidity levels are on the rise. Within the next 6 weeks the floors spaces will start to tighten up and should be back to normal by summer. Next winter use your humidifier. You will be happier for it.
