"Tie My Shoes" was written with a pointer stick, one letter at a time, I did my best. Born with a twisted body from cerebral palsy I earned a Masters Degree with honors, married and I am a father and grandfather.

But in grade school, I remember a medical doctor and educators told my mother and me that, "The ninth grade will be Lonnie's last year of school."

Then at forty-two, I suffered a fractured neck from a fall off my crutches, I still succeeded and much, much more. Read about it in my book, "Tie My Shoes." Your book support would be appreciated, thank you.

September is going to be a month of action for United Spinal, as we advocate with our elected officials in support of more funding for caregiving, updating SSI, ensuring that disaster preparedness and recovery efforts are disability-inclusive, making air travel safe for wheelchair users, and more.

September is also National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Each year, we come together to celebrate the SCI community and to educate the general public about spinal cord injury. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, there are approximately 296,000 people living with SCI in the United States. About 17,900 people in the United States will experience a spinal cord injury in 2021.

Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) are introducing a Senate resolution in support of National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. You can help United Spinal and the SCI community by asking your U.S. Senators to cosponsor this resolution.

5 Disability Bills In Congress To Watch

"It seems like Congress should be the ideal place to bring about real, substantial change affecting the whole American disability community. Something is always happening on disability issues in Washington. But it’s surprisingly hard for most people with disabilities to keep up with it all, much less maintain a clear set of workable priorities."

United Spinal endorses all of the bills listed in this article! Learn more about them and show your support through our Action Center: https://unitedspinal.org/action-center/

It’s time to reframe the negative stigma surrounding wheelchairs and mobility devices! ♿️

Repost from @dandydoodlez

Having a wheelchair feels like such a privilege and a blessing. That might sound strange to the able bodied or people without chronic illness. I certainly grew up in a world where being “confined “ to a wheelchair was something to be feared.

“Submitting” to using a wheelchair was a sign of giving up - a last resort. But this couldn’t be the furthest from the truth.

One of the best decisions I made for myself since becoming ill was getting a wheelchair. I didn’t have time to consider how other people felt about it. I wanted to live. I’m really grateful that I didn’t allow the opinions of others delay me.

People still like to give their opinions. They ask “So when do you think you’ll be out of this thing?” The answer - when I’m back at my car.

[Image description: image shows Dandy sitting in their electric wheelchair outside on the grass. They are wearing sunglasses, a navy top, black leggings and sandals. They have a long umbrella propped next to them. Behind are the ruins of a castle. Text on a rainbow above them reads “Sweet Freedom.”]

An important perspective from Anna Sarol:

There is this notion that “disabled” and “pretty” can’t and don’t coexist. Comments such as:

“Sweetheart, you are just as gorgeous as any able-bodied woman.”
“Oh, but she’s so pretty. I feel bad for her.”
“Honestly, I don’t see a disabled person... I only see a beautiful woman…”

Yes, these are real remarks that many disabled people and I receive.

This may appear to be a compliment, but in reality, it is far from it.

It is crucial to understand how we got here. Rebekah Taussig elaborated on this in her book Sitting Pretty, where she wrote, “If you live in a community where disability is framed as tragic, sad, and inferior, then claiming not to see that so-called defect feels like a favor. We try to extract the disability from the person because we think disability is ugly, and the rules tell us that this separation is nice.”

This “you’re too pretty to be in a wheelchair” perspective has caused harm and many disabled people to struggle feeling worthy. The way we say things matters. By making a conscious effort to understand the impact of our words, we can set the tone for our communities and future generations.
