TALIA SCHAFFER is a professor of English at Queens College, CUNY and the Graduate Center, CUNY, specializing in Victorian women’s writing, marriage plots, ethics, family and marriage history, domestic arts, disability studies, material culture, and aestheticism.
In this talk, Schaffer will explain what the “ethics of care” theory can teach us about caregiving. For caregiving does not just describe a short intervention; it is about relationships, and its presence compels us to think of ourselves as inherently interdependent beings, mutually relying on one another for everything.
As the world emerges from a global pandemic, people have become increasingly aware of the importance of caregiving. President Biden has a comprehensive care platform, and those suffering from long COVID, those whose experience of COVID intersects with preexisting conditions, and those who care for sick family members or were cared for all know how crucial caregiving is for survival. Yet people tend to assume that caregiving is a predominantly emergency medical mode that operates for brief intense periods, after which we can resort to our individual lives.
I am seriously contemplating joining a creative writing program. Since I teach at QC, it would probably be appropriate to consider joining some of my colleagues' courses. Just thinking...
