Fueling Our Bodies For The Future
By: Faigie Hirsch
Nutritional Advisor
With summer here we find our days filled with sunshine, which automatically makes us feel better but sometimes our bodies still crave that little bit of extra fuel and TLC. meaning what we are giving it to run on is not befitting something that is so intricate and complex, like trying to get your jaguar to run on vegetable oil instead of Petrol. Our body utilizes what we put into it to the maximum , it is therefore of paramount importance to make sure that we only supply our body with superior quality products so it can run on peak performance..Food is fuel for your body and to have optimum energy you must give it the proper fuel it needs, meaning we must look for nutrient dense food options , simply put , we must look for foods that give us the most vitamins and nutrients for what we are eating. for instance choosing a natural sweetener vs. regular sugar in our tea, we are getting the same sweetening effect but with fewer calories and no inflammatory trigger on pur inflammatory response systems. Another example would be choosing whole grain pasta or brown rice instead of white pasta or white rice, whole grain pasta offers fiber , folic acid and a host of other vitamins and minerals and a lower glycemic effect which in turn will help your blood sugar stay low and keep you satiated for a longer period of time. Nutrient dense foods help us learn to make healthier food choices and also makes us think prior to putting food into our body, remember what we put in our bodies today will have an effect on how our bodies will be in the future, the eating habits of today will form the person you will be tomorrow.Below is a list of food exchanges you may find helpful in choosing the foods you eat for a healthier you. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at 718-690-0807

These examples are just a few options you can choose from feel free to reach out to me or any nutritional advisor for more guidance.

Balancing The Unbalanced
By: Faigie Hirsch

Most often we know what we want, we just become overwhelmed by what
lays ahead in the road of unknown to reach where we desire to be. Thus it is very important to actually envision what you want, that ultimately is the first step to being happier and healthier.. Keep a list of what you have done to attain your goals, and let it serve as a daily reminder of what my goals are and what I’m working towards..
let this keep you motivated to keep on going strong!

Sometimes you have to get rid of the chometz not just your house, but your life. In order to live happier, you need to get rid of the negativity in your life.

This might even mean getting rid of the people in your life that don’t support you or try to bring you down. It’s your journey, and not everyone is meant to come along on it.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routine and stop trying new things and meeting new people, do things to make YOU happy.

Life can be hard sometimes. Dwelling on the difficulties, will not
make it any better. Change your mindset.

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Even though it might be hard, find the silver lining.

Don’t bottle up your feelings; this is unhealthy. When you have
something that you really need to work through, go to your friends and family for guidance. Processing your feelings is important to leading a healthy, happy life.

Take a moment to recognize the one above.Be thankful for what you do
have instead of concentrating on what you don’t. Too often, we spend
each day looking forward to tomorrow in hopes that we will have more.
Being thankful for what you already have in the present moment is key
to being happy.

You only get one body, and it’s the only place you have to live. You
can treat your body like a temple or like an old rusty bike, but just
know that what you do to it will reflect both outside and inside.

We as sabbath observers understand the need to rest your body that is
why we observe Shabbos. Your body needs time to relax, repair, and
recover from the stresses of the week. Get a minimum of eight hours
of beauty sleep a night and try to devote at least one day a week to
taking care of you.

A body in motion stays in motion, a body at rest stays at rest. Our
bodies are made to move! Get at least 30 minutes of exercise in a day.
The endorphin's will kick in, you will feel good, and you’ll look

Drink a little more water. You should be drinking half of your body
weight in ounces of water a day—so a person that weights 200 pounds
should be drinking at least 100 ounces of water a day, then divide
that by eight , that is how many cups you should be drinking at

There are so many health benefits that come from eating your fruits
and veggies: lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, better skin,
less fat…I could go on, but you get the point.
Get rid of the processed food in your diet. Fake sugar, white flour,
foods loaded with preservatives—these are all things that will pack on
the pounds, leave you feeling tired and have you craving more.

Stick to lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and healthy
carbohydrates and fats. The best way to do this is by shopping the
outside aisles of your grocery store. The middle aisles are usually
the boxed, bagged, and canned foods that you want to avoid.

Eating smaller meals more often will keep your metabolism revved up
and will keep you from overeating at any one meal. Both are beneficial
to reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.

Pay a visit to your doctor regularly

I know,it’s our least favorite thing to do, but it’s important to keep
up with your regular checkups. going for your annual physical, dental,
eye exam, and pap smear , the life you save may be your own.

Think of your body like a car: you wouldn’t go years without changing
the tires and the oil or checking under the hood, so why would you
neglect your body?

To sum it up: Healthy and happy go hand in hand: when you are
healthy and treating your body well, you will be happy. When you are
happy, you treat your body better. At the end of the day, life is all
about balance. Exercise, eat healthy, get rest, but enjoy yourself now
and then. Eat the cookie without feeling guilty. Find the balance

Surviving The Summer Cold
By; Faigie Hirsch
Nutritional Advisor

Summer colds are just as inconvenient as they are annoying, especially
when they interfere with vacations, weekend getaways, and outdoor
activities. When it’s a beautiful day outside and you’re stuck inside
with a summer cold, you want to get rid of that stubborn cold as
quickly as possible so you can get back to summer fun!

While summer and winter colds may feel different due to the time of
year we contract them, the bottom line is both are caused by the same
type of virus. And viruses, cannot be treated by antibiotics.

The biggest distinction between summer and winter colds is how we
react to them. In the winter, we’re naturally more accepting of
staying under the covers and eating chicken soup in an effort to treat
our colds. In the summer, we are less accepting as we are craving the
warmth and sunshine.

The duration of a cold depends on your body’s immune system, which is
dependent upon the foods we eat,and how well we maintain our immune
systems and our overall health.

Summer colds are most often caught by touching surfaces that are germ
and virus infested. Here are some basic tips to help keep you safe
from germs that can lead to a cold.

Wash your hands often.

Germs are spread from a contagious person to a healthy person
typically by hand. Your greatest defense is to wash your hands a few
times a day with warm, soapy water.

When washing your hands is not an option, hand sanitizers are the next
best thing. Make sure to keep a small bottle of sanitizer with you for
those moments that soap and water are not available

While you can’t wash a cold out of your system, drinking water and
other non sugary liquids, can help to prevent dehydration and maintain
your body’s fluids.

It’s easier said than done especially, in the summertime, but in order
for your body to recover from a virus, you must get plenty of rest.

We are more likely to catch a cold in indoors rather than outdoors.
Indoor, air conditioned environments and tight closed spaces, such as
airplanes, pose many virus-sharing risks and ultimately increase the
likelihood of catching a cold. That’s why a little time spent relaxing
in the sun can be good for you.

Ways To Keep Healthy, In The Summer

Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and nutrients will help
boost your body’s immune system. In addition to being naturally good
for you, they’re delicious, especially when in season!

Dealing With Diabetes,Under The Sun

By: Faigie Hirsch
Nutritional Advisor

Diabetes seems to trigger adverse effects in the summer if not
properly addressed.

High body temperatures can lower blood sugar. Mayo Clinic recommends that checking your sugars more often in the hot weather.

Be aware that sunburn can raise blood sugar. The Mayo Clinic advises wearing a good sunscreen about 50 spf, sunglasses, and a hat while out in the sun.

Warm skin absorbs insulin at a quicker rate, while dehydrated skin absorbs insulin at a slower pace. It is imperative to keep your injection site at normal body temperature and keeping hydrated is of utmost importance.

Dehydration from sweating can elevate blood sugar and can lead to heat exhaustion/ stroke.Cleveland Clinic recommends that people with diabetes stay hydrated as best as possible as diabetics are are at a higher risk than others to be admitted to hospitals for dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Since elevated blood sugar levels lead to urinating more, which
increases risk for dehydration, it is advised for diabetics to keep
drinking water and to carry a bottle with you on a continuous basis as to not let thirst set in.

Learn to check yourself for the signs of dehydration by pinching up some skin on your arm and letting it go. It should snap right back into place. If it goes more slowly, you are getting dehydrated.

Heat can damage insulin and other medications, and test strips. . If you take medicines with you while you’re away from home, get a cooler bag to keep your medicines and test strips in.

As it becomes harder to exercise in the heat. Movement is important, but it’s more important to keep cool. Mayo Clinic says, “Exercise and do more strenuous activities in the early or later hours of the day.
when the temperatures are cooler and the sun is not at its peak.” At night may be even better. The same is true of physical work — best not to do it in midday.

If you feel tired or dizzy at anytime please monitor your blood sugar and get medical help if needed.

Remember that being prepared before venturing outside
in the heat will make your summer a happy and healthy experience, proper nutrition and hydration are key factors to staying happy and healthy all season long.
