I see this alllll the time with my clients. It makes our time extra productive because not only am I working on their space, but now they are suddenly able to make decisions and work on a project in a way they couldn't on their own. We get so much done and its a huge reason my clients like being involved for part of each session vs. having me work solely by myself.

Body doubling is a psychology based productivity strategy that has shown strong results for people with ADHD. The concept is simple. Another person is present while a task is being completed. They do not need to help, guide, or supervise. Their presence alone changes how the brain engages with work.
ADHD is linked to differences in dopamine regulation and executive function. Tasks that lack urgency or emotional reward can feel overwhelming or impossible to start. Body doubling works because the brain responds to social presence as a form of external structure. This presence increases alertness and accountability without pressure.
Psychology research shows that being observed, even passively, can improve focus and task initiation. The nervous system becomes more regulated, reducing mental drift and avoidance behaviors. The brain interprets shared space as a cue that action is happening now.
Body doubling also reduces decision fatigue. Instead of battling internal resistance, the mind aligns with the external environment. This makes it easier to begin tasks, stay engaged, and finish them.
Importantly, body doubling is not about discipline or motivation. It supports how the ADHD brain naturally works. It can be done in person or virtually through calls or co working sessions. For many, it transforms productivity from exhausting to manageable. Understanding this method helps replace self blame with practical, brain friendly solutions.
