Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. President Joe Biden signed legislation yesterday establishing Juneteenth National Independence Day as a U.S. federal holiday. It is the first U.S. federal holiday to be established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983 and becomes at least the 11th federal holiday recognized by the U.S. federal government.
