The magic of Grand Illumination in Oak Bluffs.
Every third Wednesday in August, this historic Martha’s Vineyard tradition brings thousands of visitors annually.
The colorful gingerbread cottages are already beautiful, but they get an extra dose of razzle dazzle with colorful paper lanterns in every shape and size imaginable. It’s not a competition, but it’s also a friendly competition. Everyone goes full speed!
Some cottages follow a very strict color palette. One of my favorites was a cottage named “La Vie en Rose.” It was pink on pink on pink! Check out the post before this one for a look at that beauty.
Another cottage took it all the way to the walkway, and enlisted the help of neighborhood kids to color every brick in colored chalk. It was so beautiful!
Walking through the illuminated streets, you truly feel the heart of the island. It’s vibrant, timeless, and one of the best things to see during August on the Vineyard.

The best part about a tropical vacation is:
THE PLANTS! Yeah the beach is nice and all, but seeing our faves out in the wild is always an extra special treat!
It’s also an excellent reminder that there is no such thing as a “houseplant.” All of these plants we collect and grow indoors, are all outdoor tropical plants that we are trying to make bend to our will.
Some are more easily domesticated than others. But they are all outside plants. Seeing them grow to their full outdoor size, and climb trees, and grow MASSIVE leaves is humbling.
Save this post for the next time you kill a plant, as a reminder to cut yourself some slack. That plant wasn’t about the house life. It was for the streets. 😆

Looking for a tropical destination with a short flight from New York? Bermuda is the answer!
This summer absolutely FLEW by at cosmic speed! With September looming near we wanted to squeeze in a tropical vacay. Bermuda checked all the boxes: powdery soft sand, crystal clear water and a SUPER short flight. It’s less than 2 hours from New York!
We stayed 5 days, 4 nights and got it in!
It’s a small island, so taking in all the sights was super easy by public bus and ferry. St. George’s Parish with all of its colorful buildings was my favorite. It was also the home of an unfinished gothic church that looked just like Harrenhal—a personal highlight for me. 😝
Besides the beautiful beaches with crystal clear water (that make for great snorkeling) and super soft sand—it’s not pink, they have caves you can swim in. Check out slide nine. The water was freezing but it was very cool!
The biggest highlight of the trip was seeing both girls taking pictures of plants and flowers on their own! The plant seeds are taking root!

Come with us to Niagra Falls!
I have wanted to see the Falls FOREVER! I love waterfalls, but I was ESPECIALLY influenced by the scene from the 5th slide! I loved that cartoon, my grandmother thought he was a menace! 🤣
There was no barrel involved, but they fully lived up to expectations! They are MAGNIFICENT! Highly recommend a trip!
We flew to Buffalo, had AUTHENTIC Buffalo Wings and then drove the short trip to the falls.
Have you visited? And more importantly, did you watch that cartoon as a kid? 🤣🤣

This is the one you have been waiting for!
This is the ‘Game Changer’ Picotee Hydrangea, and it’s switching up the hydrangea season! This beauty starts pushing out blooms in early spring and keeps going all the way until the first fall frost.
This is my first intro to this variety, so of course I had to deep dive. This is what I have learned so far:
It all comes down to one botanical feature: being day-neutral. This means this hydrangea continuously sets new flower buds on both old and new wood regardless of how many hours of daylight it receives. Most traditional hydrangeas make you wait until mid-to-late summer for that first pop. This beauty gets the party started in early spring, and continues through the first fall frost!
The term “picotee” simply refers to flowers whose petals have a contrasting edge. This one has a darker pink edge along the soft delicate pink petals.
To keep this beauty thriving, here is its basic hydrangea care needs:
*Hardiness: Hardy in Zones 5 through 9.
*Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade is the sweet spot, especially in hotter climates.
*Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained.
It will stay relatively compact (around 3 to 4 feet tall and wide), making it for patio containers, small gardens, or borders.

NEW HYDRANGEA ALERT.
I recently spotted this gorgeous plant, that is completely new to me.
It is called the ‘Game Changer’ Picotee Hydrangea, and it is living up to that name. Am I the last to know? Have you ever run across this variety before or grown it?
If you are a hydrangea lover, you are going to want to know about this one. The magic is in how it behaves. It is daylight neutral, which basically means the length of the day doesn’t matter for blooms. Most hydrangeas need those long summer days to start forming their buds, but this one has been bread not to care.
It starts pushing out beautiful blooms much earlier in the spring and just keeps going, setting new flowers on new stems all the way until the first frost in the fall.
It is also incredibly versatile, with hardiness in zones 5 through 9. That means whether you want to keep it in a container or plant it directly in your garden borders, it has the stamina to handle a wide range of temps.

Hi, I’m Kamili 👋🏾
I was just looking for a nice, low-key hobby. A little something something to carve out for myself that had NOTHING to do with anyone or anything else. A way to spend a little QT time with me, that was for pleasure’s purpose.
Instead, it spiraled into a FULL-BLOWN obsession. Plant care is self care. So I wrote an entire book about it: ‘Happy Plants, Happy You,’ cause I want everyone to ride this train!
But I must WARN YOU: Following me will result in a dramatic increase in plant purchases. And probably a strong aversion to beige walls.
Don’t worry though: I won’t leave you hanging. I’ll definitely help you keep them alive AND not panic when you have pests. You’re going to have them.
I will judge you for hating Hoyas, but I might try to save you from that tragic Calathea purchase. Maybe. They are sooo pretty.

But PLEASE prep them before bringing them back indoors! If you aren’t treating them before they cross the threshold, you are actively inviting pests into your living room.
This is the foolproof routine I’ve trusted for years with 100% success to ensure we bring in the plants and nothing but the plants.
—->The Recipe:
**Fill a large tub with water.
**Add a generous pour of organic Neem Oil
Oil and water don’t mix, you need an emulsifier.
**Add a generous pour of Castile or insecticidal soap.
CRUCIAL PLANT PARENT PSA: Ditch the dish detergent. Dish detergent is not soap. It is a synthetic detergent packed with chemicals and surfactants that can strip your plant of its natural protective oils instead of just targeting the pests. Stick to true Castile or insecticidal soap to keep your houseplants safe.
—>The Routine:
1. First things first, thoroughly inspect plants for any critters.
2. Submerge them completely in the mixture. This drowns out any bugs hiding in the soil and zaps soft-bodied pests on contact.
3. Spray & Wipe: For plants too heavy to lift, give the soil and foliage a good saturating spray with the same mixture. Then wipe down every single leaf—top and bottom. A pair of microfiber gloves will really help you get the job done.
**The Added Benefit: Beyond eradicating pests, this mixture breaks down outdoor grime and leaves your houseplants with a gorgeous natural shine without clogging the pores.
