No Electric Required. The most recent delivery of Kawasaki built MTA Metro-North Railroad/CDOT M8 cars arrived in Croton on CSX Train M701-07 on September 8, 2022. These four M8s (N/W-9729-9728-9734-9735-S/E) are the latest part of a an order of dual-mode (third rail/overhead wire) passenger Electric MUs that have replaced the entire fleet. Beginning with the first arrival of M8s in 2010 to replace M2s, each additional arrival initially displaced older cars, then added to fleet capacity. The latest group also adds to the roster to support the use of M8s on Shore Line East Service which began in May, 2022. About The cars are seen holding the marker as the train passes Annsville Creek in Peekskill, New York, about 6 miles north of the end of third rail territory at a location they will not ever see in revenue service.

β€œTrains are wonderful…. To travel by train is to see nature and human beings, towns and churches and rivers, in fact, to see life.” - Agatha Christie

Test Becomes Reality. On Thursday, May 18, 2022, MNCW 9105 (Kawasaki, M-8, 2009-2015) was operating as β€œMNR Test Extra 9105” between New Haven and New London, Connecticut, seen crossing the Shaw’s Cove swing bridge west/south of the station at just before noon. The consist of MTA Metro-North Railroad 9105-9104-9365-9364 was operating to allow Amtrak crews to train on this equipment, which will displace diesel sets to become the new standard for passenger transportation on Tuesday May 24, 2022. The service to Shore Line East β€œlocal" stations was ended by Amtrak in 1981 and brought back by CT Department Of Transportation in 1990 as a temporary measure to relieve traffic due to construction on Interstate 95. 32 years later, it seems it will be around for the foreseeable future.

A Sunset Cameo. On Friday, May 18, 2022, CTDX P40BWH 6705 (nΓ©e-AMTK 841, P40DC) pulls Shore Line East Train 1687 west from the Old Saybrook, Connecticut Station. This former P40DC is one of 12 (8 received directly from Amtrak, 4 from NJ TRANSIT that had previously been Amtrak engines) that are being rebuilt at Amtrak’s Beech Grove, Indiana shops, with the first returning to service in 2021. These engines were in the CTRail rotation, serving both the SLE and Hartford Lines. Starting on May 24, 2022, these diesels, along with six GP40-3Hs, will primarily serve the Hartford Line as 4-car trains of Kawasaki built MTA Metro-North M8s will hold down the SLE assignment. When the MTA Metro-North Railroad timetable is changed, one set will eventually serve as a protect for the Danbury and Waterbury Branches.

The Day It Will Be True Is Today. A few days after the 25th Anniversary of Shore Line East Service, CTRail/CTDX GP40-2H 6694 (nΓ©e-BO 4005, GP40, 8/1971) led a string of former Virginia Railway Express Mafersa coaches west on Train 3661 crossing Shaw's Cove moveable bridge in New London, Connecticut on June 6, 2015. Some combination of my original caption (and editor Tom Nemeth’s insights) made it to print and the cover of the August 2015 issue of β€œRailpace Newsmagazine” describing this photo and a similar frame for the article. We wrote "Get those diesel Shore Line East shots while you can. Reports indicate diesel consists on the SLE may soon be replaced with ConnDOT MU equipment.” On May 24, 2022, that becomes true as 4-car trains of Kawasaki built MTA Metro-North M8s will now exclusively hold down the SLE assignment. It is always easier to write about history than predict the future, so we were certainly accurate when we also wrote "When SLE started in 1990, there was no overhead wire on the Shore Line.” This engine has since been rebuilt as a GP40-3H and repainted from the New Haven Railroad McGinnis tribute into the modern CTRail β€œCoke Zero” paint scheme.

Just Trying It Out. In response to substantial construction on Interstate 95 in 1990, the Connecticut Department of Transportation decided to institute temporary local service along the Northeast Corridor Line. A long lineage of servicing stations outside of the main cities in this area operated by the New Haven Railroad, Penn Central, and Amtrak had ended in 1981. On May 29, 1990, Shore Line East service, which had even carried the NYNH&H β€œClamdigger” name during the planning phase, began with 4 round trips a day between New Haven and Old Saybrook, CT. Initially using equipment that had been purchased from PATrain service in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which had been discontinued in 1985, the two F units were painted in a New Haven Railroad’s McGinnis tribute paint scheme, while ten Pullman Standard coaches were also spruced up with a new look in white with black and red stripes. On Wednesday, August 29, 1990, a two car Shore Line East train was preparing to leave the New Haven, Connecticut yard with CTDX 6691 (nΓ©e-TNO 365, F7A, 5/1953) as the conductor is ready to throw the switch. The height disadvantage of the photographer is evident from the angle, but the continuation of service in the antecedent 32 years have provided more opportunities to shoot this service, which starting on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 will be exclusively served by 4-car trains of Kawasaki built MTA Metro-North Railroad M8s ending the diesel era.

Electric Day. On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, the Connecticut Department of Transportation Shore Line East, Amtrak, and MTA Metro-North Railroad will see the results of decades of planning and initiate Shore Line East electric MU service using Kawasaki built M8s. When SLE began in 1990, there had been a nine year absence of service to β€œlocal” stations along the Shore Line. The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, Penn Central and Amtrak had operated steam or diesel service to the stations between New Haven and Old Saybrook before low ridership and other factors led to its cessation in 1981. The line was electrified in stages in the 1990s, and the question persisted about if and when electric MUs would cover these runs. The return of local service to the Shore Line was thought to be temporary to reduce traffic on Interstate 95 during construction, but nearly 32 years after commencing on May 29, 1990, it is still operating.

It was exciting to be on the inaugural ride of the first electric train on Shore Line East. Together with Connecticut Department of Transportation, Office of Governor Ned Lamont, our federal delegation, many of my colleagues, as well as First Selectman Matt Hoey and First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons, we were able to experience the new M8 which has zero carbon emissions, will cut travel times with its highly efficient and faster acceleration, and integrate into a cleaner rail network. Bonus for all of our Shoreline riders - these cars have higher seat backs, roomier seating, larger windows, curved luggage racks, LED displays for showing upcoming stops and outlets throughout for charging devices.
We're thrilled to have our M8 fleet operate on Shore Line East to further serve riders in southern Connecticut with electric train service.
🚞 What a day for the inaugural ride of the first M8 Electric Train on Shore Line East. The M8s emit no carbon emissions, are more reliable & are quieter inside & out. They’ve got additional amenities, such as power outlets at each seat, compared to diesel trains. The on-board bathrooms were large and handicapped accessible.
Oh and don’t forget that new car smell. Try it out!
Shore Line East SCHEDULE CHANGE BEGINNING MAY 24TH ⛔️

Electric Shore Line East. It was not all that long ago that EMD F40s exclusively ruled the Northeast Corridor Line from New Haven, Connecticut to Boston, Massachusetts. It would have been then hard to imagine all of the changes that have occurred, such as Amtrak Acela high speed direct service from Washington D.C. to Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to the electrification of this portion of the line, Shore Line East service began in 1990 as a temporary measure to relieve congestion during a period of construction on Interstate 95 with equipment purchased from the recently discontinued PATrain. Since then, newer equipment has been purchased and service has substantially increased. In yet another service improvement, MTA Metro-North Railroad M8s 9105 9105-9104-9365-9364 (Kawasaki, 2009-2015) operate as the training train just ahead of the imminent use of electric MUs on this line, seen at the New London, Connecticut Station Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Beginning on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, these cars will be the exclusive fleet for Shore Line East service using 4-car trains on the present schedule with minor adjustments, which will eventually become 6-car trains with planned direct service to Grand Central Terminal. The existing fleet of diesel engines and coaches will allow for changes in the Hartford Line roster.
