Here’s an annual reminder that October is Filipino American HISTORY Month - written by our late FANHS National Scholar and Trustee Emerita Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon in 2013.

As we start to celebrate and organize events for October let’s remember that it is Filipino American History Month and not Filipino Heritage Month, Filipino American Heritage Month, nor it is not Pilipino American History Month. It is also not PAHM, it is FAHM!

FANHS National declared October in the US as Filipino American History Month because we want to honor the Filipino American experience. We want to honor the HISTORY of the first Filipinos who stepped foot in continental America. That day was October 18, 1587 in Morro Bay, California. That is why it is important to understand the backstory of why it is called Filipino American History Month in October. Filipinos existed in America long before it became a country.

Keep in mind that when you organize your events, workshops, conferences, activities in October, they should focus solely on FilAm history, narratives, and experiences.

Filipino American history is part of the US narrative, yet we are rarely mentioned in our history books! October is a month for us to be proud, October is a month for us to represent as FilAms. It is also a month to honor all our ancestors who came before us and paved the way for us to be here today!

Remember, you can celebrate your heritage everyday but not your history!
