Regulators are gathering input on how to label barley, rye, and oats for gluten and cross-contact risk, with the Brewers Association favoring the current framework and grain industry groups raising questions about how oats should be handled.

🔹 Some gluten-free barley beers may not be as clean as labeled.
A new detection method found celiac-active protein fragments in 7 of 21 barley beers labeled gluten-free — gaps standard tests missed entirely.
None of GFFP's certified beer producers fall into the category this study flagged.

🔹 Virginia mandates allergy labels on takeout orders.
Starting July 1, a new state law requires an identifying marker, covering gluten alongside the other major allergens, on any delivery or carryout order altered for a customer's allergy or sensitivity.

🔹 A probiotic yeast reduced gluten-driven inflammation in preclinical models.
Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 restored a disrupted immune signaling pathway in mouse and human microbiota-based models, though the effect required specific gut bacteria to already be present.

Waitrose pulled its Hot Cross Buns in the UK; Québec's MAPAQ recalled Domaine de l'Ange-Gardien’s ham meatballs and a maple-cream pastry; Ireland recalled Moin Bio Vegan and Butter Croissants; and Canada's CFIA recalled three Wu Xian Zhai Soybean Snacks flavors.

🔹Celiac disease is associated with an 18% higher risk of death.
Tracking 204,000 adults across 71 U.S. healthcare systems, researchers also found an 11% higher risk of major cardiovascular events and a 51% higher risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The study did not assess gluten-free diet adherence.

Representatives Cleaver and McCollum introduced the Celiac Safety Act on May 28 — the first federal proposal to require the FDA to list barley and rye alongside wheat as major food allergens.

🔹Celiac disease is associated with nearly triple the risk of needing a solid organ transplant.
A Columbia University study tracking 41,277 people over 12 years found the highest increase was seen for liver transplants, supporting earlier celiac screening in some patients with chronic liver or kidney disease.
