Yep, it's that time of year. A little later than normal, but haying is well underway.

We've decided these three Spring 2024 bull calves have enough potential to hang onto and to see how they develop.

Update. Heifer #33 calved a week ago and is the mother we had hoped for ... although it's a promising bull calf.
Previous post from a year ago: I posted on 09.04.2022 this picture of seven week old heifer #33 with caption, "Maybe one of the best and most promising heifer calves we've raised here at Dunn Ranch Beefmasters (Navasota, TX) during 30 years in the industry." She is now 17 months old, has met the high expectations we set for her, and is now ready for breeding. We hope to provide an update next year with mom and the first of her many high quality heifer calves.

First of our Fall 2024 calves, right on schedule and born on Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday. A nice looking and vibrant bull calf. We're thinking of naming him Jimmy.

What a difference green grass makes. We are thankful for the rain here in South Central Texas. This is "Sis", one of our favorite mommas. She produces keepers. Her pedigree on the sire side includes Polled Mandate & Jezabelle and on the dam's side is all Long’s L2 Ranch with Synergy & Miss Red Sugar.

This past Saturday, we tried out the IDEXX Alertys OnFarm Pregnancy Test which uses a blood sample. With the assistance of an IDEXX Field Services Consultant, we tested eleven cows and were finished with results within two hours. It was worthwhile because we detected two cows that are not pregnant and we are now trained and equipped to run the tests ourselves in the future.

Capanna turned 13 years old this week. She just had her 10th calf two weeks ago. She is from a heifer I purchased online in 2008 from an L2 Long Beefmaster sale out of Captain Lucey x Sugar Anna. She is a great granddaughter out of Long's fantastic Sugar Ann donor.
