Safer 17 - Murrells Inlet
A community-led safety initiative focused on Hwy 17 in Murrells Inlet, SC. In memory John H. Oakes Jr I wasn’t an advocate for safe streets.
This wasn’t on my radar. Then my father was fatally hit by the driver of an SUV. I’m just a Yankee with strong ties to the South, who cares about the South and the community my father and family loved so much. I am making it my personal mission to ensure no one - no one - in Murrells Inlet ever has to receive the call I did.
Reminder: not everything’s a personal attack. You can find humor in darkness.
This is why we care about road safety.

In South Carolina, two hours from Murrells Inlet, Samantha Miller was killed on her wedding night when their golf cart was rear-ended by an intoxicated driver at 65mph - 40mph over the speed limit.
Guess what? Golf cart crashes often go unreported.
Another failure in the system.
PS: No settlement can bring back your loved one.

On August 1, 2024, my dad died after being hit by an SUV on 17. No family, victim, or driver should ever have to go through this kind of pain.
I created this campaign to make 17 safer in Murrells Inlet because my dad will not just be a news story or a statistic.
Please join me in this important fight for the community. There's a quick questionnaire to help guide our efforts in supporting the community.
