There's a structure on Edisto Island as old as Stonehenge, and most South Carolinians have never heard of it. π
The Fig Island shell ring complex, built by Indigenous peoples roughly 4,200 to 4,300 years ago, contains three massive interconnected rings made from over 22,000 cubic meters of oyster and clam shells. It's one of the largest and most complex ancient shell ring sites in North America, comparable in age to the pyramids of Giza.
This ancient site is slowly disappearing into the marsh, making it even more remarkable that it's survived this long. Tag someone who needs to know this piece of South Carolina's deepest history.
