Some pictures of yesterday’s enforcement acti on in Cherokee County. Law Enforceme nt Officers with Cherokee, Clay, and Grah am County Sheriff’s Offices, Bryson City PD, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigatio ns, the North Carolina State Highway Patr ol and the NC State Bureau of Investigati on combined their efforts to keep Cherok ee County a safe community.

Through th is cooperative enforcement effort 21 individuals we re arrested for various crimes including narcot ic violations, child support orders as we ll as various traffic related charges.

We are appreciative of our Detention Sta ff who held a lions share of t he work processing the arrestees.

National Correctional Officers Week is celebrat ed in the first week of M ay — from May 1 to 7 th is year. Former President Ronald Reagan establish ed this week on May 5, 1984. He s aw the need to create a we ek for correctional officers to thank th em for their services and celebrate the ir contributions to society. Often, they a re to make sure the court orde rs are seen through and implemented. Duri ng this week, various U.S. agencies hon or correctional officers in our jails, priso ns, and community correctional facilities by organizi ng different programs for them.

We at t he Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office thank o ur Corrections Staff for the outstanding w ay they do a sometime thankless j ob.

THREE ARRESTED FOR TRAFFICKING METH

Murphy, NC—T he Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reports t he May 01, 2022 arrest of 38 ye ar old David Anthony Corso, 32 ye ar old John Daniel Reece II, a nd 37 year old Jenny Marie Davenpo rt, all who listed Murphy North Caroli na as their address, for Trafficking in Methamphetamine.

In the early morning hours of M ay 01, 2022 Cherokee County Deputy Sheri ff was making a patrol in t he area of known drug activity. Whi le patrolling in the area the Depu ty observed a vehicle with a Georg ia registration plate leave the area. T he Deputy made a traffic stop a nd upon identifying the individuals he develop ed probable cause to conduct a sear ch of the vehicle. Upon searching t he vehicle the Deputy located a trafficki ng amount of suspected methamphetamine. Along wi th the Methamphetamine paraphernalia was seized. Duri ng the booking process of Davenport an addition al amount of methamphetamine was located on h er person where it had been secreted.

David Anthony Corso was booked in to the Cherokee County Detention Center f or TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, POSS W/I MANUF/SELL/D EL SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESS DR UG PARAPHERNALIA. The Cherokee County Magistrate s et a $50,000.00 secure bond, and Cor so is scheduled to appear in Cherok ee County District Court on May 12, 2022.

John Daniel Reece II w as booked into the Cherokee County Detenti on Center for TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, PO SS W/I MANUF/SELL/DEL SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTAN CE, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. The Cherokee Coun ty Magistrate set a $50,000.00 secure bo nd and Reece is scheduled to appe ar in Cherokee County District Court on M ay 12, 2022.

Jenny Marie Davenport w as booked into the Cherokee County Detenti on Center for TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, PO SS W/I MANUF/SELL/DEL SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTAN CE, POSSESS CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE PRISON/JAIL PREMISSES, MAINTA IN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESS MARIJUANA PARAPHERNAL IA, EXPIRED REGISTRATION CARD/TAG. The Cherokee Coun ty Magistrate set a $100,000.00 secure bo nd and Davenport is scheduled to appe ar in Cherokee County District Court on M ay 12, 2022.

Chief Deputy Joe Wood stat ed “Good work by an alert Depu ty while patrolling an area that h as known drug activity. As you c an see our, by this arrest a nd others, our Officers are out a ll hours of the day and nig ht being vigilant. We continue to wo rk together with our community to identi fy these hotbeds of illegal activity to sh ut them down. The community’s observations a nd input are like an extra s et of eyes and ears in o ur fight, and we ask that o ur community continue to use our t ip lines to help us make Cherok ee County a safe drug free community.”

The Narcotic Detectives with the Cherok ee County Sheriff's Office made a traff ic stop on a vehicle operated by Patric ia Waldroup and Lindsey Lemon. Detectives we re able to form probable cause a nd conducted a search of the vehic le and seized over 10 grams of fentanyl/hero in. Patricia Waldroup was charged wi th trafficking and is under a $75,000. 00 secure bond. Lindsey Lemon was charg ed with possession of paraphernalia and w as released on a $1000.00 unsecure bo nd.

On Saturday April 23, 2022 at 12: 05 AM a female was observed removi ng items from Logan Run Rescue donati on tables. The female w as immediately stopped by Cherokee County Sheriff 's Office Sgt. Cody WIlliams who w as vigilant in his duties while on patr ol. Sgt. Williams issued the fema le a criminal summons. The property w as recovered and returned.

The great wo rk by our sheriff's office continues to det er larcenies in the late evenings.

We are hoping the word is getti ng out that people will be he ld accountable if caught stealing in Cherok ee County.

MARBLE NC MAN ARRESTED FOR EXPLOITATI ON OF MINOR

Murphy, NC—The Cherokee County Sheriff ’s Office reports the April 06, 2022 arre st of 76 year old David Euge ne Barnes, of Marble North Carolina on charg es of Sexual Exploitation of Minors..

In Mar ch of 2022, the Cherokee County Sheriff ’s Office received notification of an individu al in the Marble Community who h ad utilized an online email provider to se nd and received numerous images of Chi ld Sexual Exploitation Material. During the investigati on information provided by the National Cent er for Missing and Exploited Children (NCME C), the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigati on and Homeland Security Investigations was instrument al in identifying the individual as Dav id Barnes and his residence location.

On Apr il 06, 2022 Investigators with the Cherok ee County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Securi ty Investigations served a search warrant at t he Marble residence of Barnes. Several ite ms of evidence were seized during t he search of the residence.

David Euge ne Barnes was arrested and booked in to the Cherokee County Detention Center on: 10 counts Second Degree Sexual Exploitati on of a Minor and 10 coun ts of Third Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Min or. The North Carolina Magistrate set a $600,000. 00 secure bond. Barnes Cherokee County Distri ct Court date is April 14, 2022.

Chi ef Deputy Joe Wood stated “I wou ld like to remind our citizens th at April is National Child Abuse Preventi on Month. Children are our most precio us resource. The team work by t he investigators both here and at t he State and Federal level is outstandi ng and shows the dedication these gre at officers go to keeping our childr en safe. This case is far fr om finished as we continue to p ut pieces of the puzzle together.”

GEORGIA MAN ARRESTED AFTER 50 BREAK-I NS IN CHEROKEE COUNTY NC

Murphy, NC—The Cherok ee County Sheriff’s Office reports the Mar ch 31, 2022 arrest of 35 ye ar old Jack Earnest Smith, of Baldw in Georgia in connection with multiple break-i ns committed on 30 March 2021.

In Janua ry 2022 while Smith was being transferr ed from a local health care facili ty to another one in Western Nor th Carolina, it was reported that he sto le personal items including financial cards of t he health care worker in Cherokee Coun ty. Once Smith was cleared to be incarcerat ed he was arrested on the charg es from the earlier theft. Smith w as released on bond on an unsecu re bond March 26, 2022.

During t he night of March 30, 2022 sever al vehicles and buildings were broken in to. During one of the break -i ns the owner of the residence observ ed Smith who ran from the residen ce. Additionally, while the responding deputy to o ne of the reported breaking and enteri ng found the release order that w as given to Smith at the ti me of his release on March 26, 2022.

Smith was arrested and book ed into the Cherokee County Detention Cent er for BREAKING AND ENTERING A MOT OR VEHICLE X 5. Smith is present ly under a $9000.00 secure bond. Smi th has a April 28, 2022 Cherok ee County District Court date.

Chief Deputy J oe Wood stated “I want to comme nd the work of the Patrol a nd Investigations Division. The team work help ed bring this situation to a clo se quickly. We continue to investigate sever al more break-ins in connection with Smith ’s crime spree.
