Chip Off the Ol’ Block (COTOB)
Chip! We are calling him Chip! There are too many Jimmie’s and he LOOKS LIKE HIS DAD! Unfortunately, Great Grandmothers don’t have naming rights so Jimmie Clark III is what’s on the birth certificate but you can call me Chip!
Growing up I can remember idolizing my dad “Jim Jr.” and my Papa “Jim Sr”. Two men that meant the world to me. Their integrity, character and work ethic is what drew me to them and I wanted that! Well up until I was 13 and I began to want to just be me. As a kid, I thought that meant that I had to separate myself from who made me in order to be who I wanted to become. So the name that was given to identify me with who and where I came from I learned to use as an escape. Knowing me as Chip gave me a separation from the name Jimmie. It wasn’t until I was 23 that I began again to embrace who I am. I AM JIMMIE and I am a Chip off the Ol Block (COTOB)!
The older I get the more I understand that being a COTOB is more than just who I look like but even my process of thought, mannerism, and tendencies that resemble those who have impacted my life along the way as well as who I have impacted. My mom, dad, aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins, grandparents, and my children all carry a Block in which I was chipped!
Their story and YOUR story is no different, we all have a COTOB story! What’s yours?
