⭐️Landing with your foot under your body as you run improves your efficiency and places less stress through your joints with each step
⭐️ If you land with your foot way out in front of you it essentially acts as a braking mechanism and ends up working against you
⭐️Simple cues make a big difference: think about maintaining a slight forward lean, keeping your feet under you, and landing with soft, quick steps

Similar to this client’s prior experience, many people with injuries are told they need expensive injections, procedures, and MRIs. Oftentimes, these things can be avoided with a proper evaluation and rehab program designed by a movement specialist. And maybe even more important than the exercise selection itself is the reassurance that our bodies are strong, resilient, and capable of healing when we load them gradually and specifically to what our goals are💪

To sum it up: that was hard 😆 I am so grateful for my cheer squad and all the encouraging messages & prayers from family, friends, & clients that helped me through♥️ Y’all are the absolute BEST.

Sparknotes Recap:

2.4 mile 🏊‍♀️ The event I was most nervous for went most smoothly! Lots of jellyfish to keep me company too. Thank you to for all the open water practice :)

112 mile 🚴 This was smooth sailing until ~mile 82 when I got a flat tire. Unfortunately, my can of pit stop didn’t do the trick and I was at the mercy of the next available bike tech to help me. Took about 45 mins before I was on the road again. THANK YOU to the kind volunteers who kept me company as I intermittently burst into tears 😅 and to my fam for driving up to the next aid station to let them know I needed help!

26.2 mile 🏃‍♀️ Great crowd support which was helpful because this was tough! Felt nauseous and my salt tabs fell out of my pocket somewhere around mile 8. I stopped at every aid station and tried to eat whatever I could stomach and just told myself to put one foot in front of the other. I kept looking down at on my arm: “Mind over matter. You can do this.” And I did! It was the best feeling to hear those words as I crossed the finish line: “Alison Berglund, you are an IRONMAN.” 🙌

I had LOTS of time to think, reflect, & pray during all of this. It’s so clear to me that God was with me through the ups and downs and gave me the strength to continue on. Of course I was bummed about the bike mishap, but my finish time on the bike was 6 hrs, 33 min. 6:33 — I don’t believe in coincidences but I do believe that was God telling me He was right there with me. I’m thanking Him for a body that can swim, bike, and run lots of miles and for the amazing people in my life who have provided so much support and encouragement 💕

Meet my client, Bob! He has been training for the last few months to complete the Bike MS event this weekend beginning in St. Augustine, Florida. Bob will ride a total of 154 miles over the course of 2 days! He is riding to raise money that helps fund research to improve the quality of life of people affected by MS. Bob inspires me and our community with his commitment, ambition, and compassion. AND (although he doesn’t look it), he will be celebrating his 73rd birthday in just 2 months— proving to us that age is really just a number 💪😊🚴

⚡️The long term solution is to figure out WHY you’re in pain and address the root cause. Otherwise, the same problem will come back again and again. 🩹 Injury typically develops because our body is unable to sustain the load we are asking of it. Oftentimes, the root cause of the injury is related to tissue weakness and training volume (too much too quickly).

❌ The answer is typically not complete rest because this only weakens that muscle/tendon/tissue further. When we finally do return to our sport or activity, we will often find ourselves dealing with the same issue yet again.

✅ Instead, let’s focus on our strength, movement, and gradual progression! This strategy takes some intentionality and modification, but it’s worth it to get our bodies moving better and feeling better 👏

How many times have you been told that a certain activity or exercise is “bad” for you? As an endurance athlete, I’ve been told this many times! And it’s not true ❌

This week .endurance.nutritionist & I kicked off a Masterclass series for runners about nutrition & strength training/injury prevention. We discussed that running is not “bad” for us. It does, however, place stress on our bodies that we need to adapt to over time. That is why increasing our body’s loading tolerance through strength training & ensuring gradual progression of mileage are 🔑!!

I’m thankful to be able to run, move, & train for crazy races! I’m also so grateful to be able to help other people feel better & continue doing the activities they love to do🤍
