We are heartbroken to share that Asphalt Superintendent C.J. Bryant was struck and killed last night inside the I-40 work zone.

A driver entered our lane closure about 3:20am and struck C.J. After the accident, the driver ran from the scene but was later caught by law enforcement. Fortunately, no one else was injured.

C.J. was a hardworking leader at S.T. Wooten for the last 6 years. Starting as a foreman, he worked on several big jobs, including I-795, US 70, and another section of I-40 in Sampson County. He quickly became known for keeping his jobs ahead of schedule and always working to improve.

He was promoted to superintendent in 2021, where he began overseeing multiple jobs. He was responsible for the big picture but still loved working on the jobsite with the crews and his fellow employees.

C.J. leaves behind his fiancé (together 16 years) and 4 children. Please keep them, his friends and family, C.J.’s crew, and all our employees in your thoughts and prayers.

Moving in to the week ahead, we would like to express our deepest condolences to our friends and neighboring business, RM Palmer Company, the victims, the survivors, all of the employees, friends and families of those who were lost and of those who are continuing their fight. We extend our condolences to the tenants of the apartment building that must be demolished, as well as the church and its members. A huge thank you to Brandon Willman and Lattanzio Sandwiches for teaming up with us to donate over 50 sandwiches and salads to the first responders and volunteers. Also, a huge thank you to the surrounding fire companies, police, ems, k-9s, relief organizations, etc. who have worked tirelessly since Friday. Let us keep everyone in our prayers and keep the momentum of the community's support going year round.

Received today from the Wilson School District.

We were blessed this year to have Elyse Norman from Wilson as our High School intern. Her last day is Friday with Graduation in 2 weeks, so we took her to lunch to celebrate. I enjoy teaching young people about our chosen profession.

After a long process to acquire the necessary Right-of-Way, the start date for our SR1004-02B Design/Build project, with Grace Industries is only 2-weeks away. A bridge, restricted to one-way traffic is soon to be replaced.
