🇺🇸Welcome Home, Chaplain Leo!🇺🇸
Yesterday, we had a great blessing as a familiar face rejoined the coffee shop after a prolonged absence due to COVID. The crowd erupted in applause and held signs saying, "Welcome Home Leo!" Leo Fahey (Joyce Fahey) is the coffee shop's beloved Chaplain (and comedian) who brings us messages of love and hope that he shares in his devotions on Thursday mornings.

Richard's Coffee Shop/Military Museum Richard's Coffee Shop is a living military museum dedicated to honoring America's veterans, active duty personnel and emergency services personnel.

The veterans who visit the shop played a part in the history of the artifacts and memorabilia displayed in the museum. There are two special events that happen each week;

1 - Thursdays is a day for veterans to come and get together and enjoy each others company and a free coffee.

2 - Saturdays we have a Music Jam session which anyone is welcome to come in and either play or have a cup of coffee

Operating as usual

What a great morning at Richard's Coffee Shop! Thank you to John Gallina (Founder, Purple Heart Homes) and Sandi Prichard VanWormer (Purple Heart Homes) for presenting us with the cool Hardcore Purple Heart Hammer! We're honored to collaborate on events and greatly appreciate everything you do to support our coffee shop and, most importantly, our veterans.

We also had an exciting announcement from Lori M. Vrcan and Jamie Jollie of CarePatrol of Charlotte. They will be hosting a monthly meeting at the coffee shop to provide another avenue for military veterans to connect, socialize and learn about valuable resources. Date/time TBD.

Thank you to the men and women of the Mooresville VFW for presenting the coffee shop with a generous donation this morning! Between the local chapters of the VFW and VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America), they have donated a significant amount of money to support veterans at Richard's Coffee Shop.

Do you know a local veteran? We encourage you to help us spread the word about our "Free Coffee for Veterans" on Thursdays and bring a friend!

Honoring our Veterans - Memoriam 2021

As we near the end of 2021, we pause to recognize our fellow brothers and sisters that have passed this year as we keep their family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.🇺🇸

12/23/2021

End of Year Thank You Message!

A THANK YOU message from our veterans:

We are all looking forward to welcoming a new year focused on a positive and healthy future. However, we pause for a moment of reflection to thank our community, our generous donors and our volunteers that have enabled us to continue our Welcome Home Veterans (501c3) mission at Richard's Coffee Shop.

Since we reopened in April 2021, we’ve proudly served nearly 3,500 military veterans—and this number is just for our “Free Coffee For Veterans on Thursdays!” We also continue to “welcome home” new military veterans as they visit our coffee shop and sign our Book of Honor which has thousands and thousands of signatures!

It is hard to put into words how much we appreciate the support, partnerships, recognition and donations we’ve received from our community. We extend a sincere appreciation to those who organized fundraising events like Bryan and Kate Kennedy-Holliday for their 12th annual Tee Off For A Veteran golf tournament and their continued mission to support veteran-related organizations around Lake Norman. And, we were honored once again with the recognition from the Town of Mooresville NC for their spectacular Veterans Day parade--the patriotism exuding from those lining the streets was palpable! We salute Lowe's Home Improvement and Purple Heart Homes for our majestic new American flag and flag pole AND for their VERY generous donation that will enable us to replace our HVAC system!

Because of this community’s support and generosity, we’ve been able to continue to fulfill our mission to help local military veterans and their family members who are in desperate need of assistance. The assistance we provide is tailored to each veteran depending on their unique situation and need.

As we near the end of 2021, we also pause to recognize our fellow brothers and sisters that have passed this year as we keep their family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.

On behalf of all the veterans at Richard’s Coffee Shop, we extend a heartfelt thank you to our community. We appreciate you and are incredibly grateful for your support. We hope you continue to join us for coffee and camaraderie in 2022!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
With gratitude and respect,
-The Veterans at Richard’s Coffee Shop

What a great Thursday!

Yesterday, the Alexandriana Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution, located in Huntersville, N.C.) visited with our veterans and presented us with a very generous donation and a certificate of appreciation for supporting local veterans! The DAR mission is dedicated to preserving American history, securing America’s future through better education and promoting patriotism.

We also were honored to present Brad Stroud, U.S. Army Veteran and the Iredell County Government Veterans Service Office (VSO) Manager, with a small token of appreciation (photograph and signatures of veterans from Richard's Coffee Shop) as he retires from his position the end of this year. On behalf of all of the veterans and their spouses, we offer a huge heartfelt thanks to Brad for his phenomenal efforts to provide guidance and act as a advocate for Iredell county military veterans.

We live in a very special community and are truly grateful for the support--THANK YOU!

Field Trip Friday! Today, a group of veterans from Richard's Coffee Shop enjoyed a tour of the C-17 at the North Carolina Air National Guard. What an impressive and massive aircraft! Thank you to Maj VanWormer and the team at NC ANG for the tour. We salute you and very much appreciate your service to our country.

P.S. We extend a special "thank you" to our Army Veteran extraordinaire, Darryel Connell, for organizing this tour!

We love it when our "regulars" introduce us to local organizations that help our fellow veterans! Thank you to Irvin Brawley (US Army, Vietnam Veteran) for inviting Ross Cole and Karen Oritiz from HopeWay, a mental health treatment facility located in Charlotte.

As veterans, we've lived a unique way of life where our encounters may have led to anxiety, depression, addiction and/or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For some of us, simply sitting around the coffee table on a Thursday morning at Richard's Coffee Shop is all the "therapy" we need. For others, we need a little guidance in how to deal with the issues that impact our mental health and daily life.

Ross and Karen shared information about Hopeway's newest service line which provides specialized treatment for veterans living with PTSD and related mental health issues. With veteran suicide rates on the rise and reliance on medications that often come with undesirable side effects, Hopeway's goal is to reduce the rate of suicide for our nation’s heroes and provide them with the support and treatment they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Thank you Karen and Ross! We all need that "little nudge" to take care of ourselves--especially when it comes to mental wellness.
