Wild Birds Unlimited

Hummingbirds are beginning to migrate north back to their breeding territory for the spring and summer and you may notice an influx as migrators pass through!

As temperatures rise, daylight lengthens, and plants begin to regrow, the hummingbird activity and numbers increase as they search for nectar and small insects. Make this migration easy by offering a nectar feeder and/or planting native, tubular flowers in your yard.

We recommend any of our High Perch Hummingbird Feeders that include a lifetime warranty and donโ€™t leak. Place the nectar feeders away from other bird feeders and make sure your nectar is freshened every 3-4 days.
Seen any goldfinches lately?

For the entire fall and winter, we have seen these guys as a very dull-gray color with very little yellow that their name implies. As we move through March, you might notice that their color is starting to brighten up again for the breeding season.

American Goldfinches are the only finch in North America that molts or sheds their feathers twice a year and this process takes a lot of energy to complete.

Make sure you are offering Nyjer or our Finch Blend that includes sunflower chips to make this process easier for them.

Try these foods in one of our Finch Feeders for the greatest number of goldfinches to visit your yard.

Knock, KNOCK! (Who's there) A woodpecker. ๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘

๐Ÿ˜‚If this joke isn't funny to you...we've got some tips! ๐Ÿคฃ

Generally, woodpeckers peck at houses for one of three reasons: drumming to attract a mate or proclaim their territory; drilling holes to find food; or excavating a nest cavity. No matter the reason, here are some ways to keep them off your house.

Feeding Woodpeckers
โ€ขOffer suet and cylinders to help draw them off your house. Yes, attracting them to your feeder actually HELPS this situation. โ˜บ๏ธ

Scaring Woodpeckers
โ€ขBe vigilant and tenacious! (woodpeckers are protected, never make attempts to harm them)
โ€ขHang holographic tape, pie plates, old CDs or DVDs or pinwheels near damaged spots or drumming sites. They must be able to move with the breeze while reflecting light to be most effective.

Excluding Woodpeckers
โ€ข Cover the site with plastic or nylon netting or hardware cloth.
โ€ข Cover drumming sites with cloth or foam to dampen the resonance.
โ€ข Place a woodpecker nest box over the area if it looks like they are making a nest cavity.

They say Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year and it is pretty jolly BUT spring takes the cake in our book!
Cardinals are beginning their nesting season!

Watch as the males start to sing and fight over territory (sometimes their own reflection) while the female waits for her man to clear the area. Cardinals are scoping out dense bushes or shrubs to nest in for the spring and summer.

When they are ready to mate, the pair will raise their heads and sway back and forth while singing. The male will then โ€œkissโ€ the female as he reaches over to feed her.

The female will then build the nest out of twigs, grass, vines, bark strips, and even hair.

Attract them with any of our seed blends!
We know these birds aren't always a crowd favorite but they sure are NEAT!

Grackles are fascinating birds with a variety of unique adaptations. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿค“

For example, their strong jaw muscles allow them to crack open chestnuts, beechnuts and acorns. ๐Ÿฅœ๐Ÿ’ช

They also have a sharp keel on their bill that they use to saw acorns and dried corn into smaller pieces.

In addition, grackles are known for their intelligence. Some grackles have been observed following robins in order to steal their worms. ๐Ÿฅท๐Ÿชฑ

This shows that grackles are able to learn and adapt to their environment in order to find food. ๐Ÿ˜‹

Overall, grackles are interesting birds with many unique features. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Without strong, healthy feathers, birds would be unable to fly or keep warm. ๐Ÿชถ

Feathers are an essential part of a bird's anatomy, and young birds need extra proteins and fats in their diet to ensure that their feathers grow properly. ๐Ÿฃ

A lack of nutrients can cause feathers to be poorly colored or defective, which can seriously impact a bird's ability to fly or stay warm. ๐Ÿ˜ž

As a result, it is essential that young birds have a diet that is rich in proteins and fats in order to grow strong, healthy feathers.๐Ÿ’ฏ

Hummingbirds in the HOUSE!!!! Well...technically outside of the house but tell us how your hummingbird activity is going! Don't forget the nectar solution is just one part sugar to 4 parts water. No red dye needed and be sure to freshen it up at least 2 times a week. Nectar will last about a month in the fridge!

The White-breasted Nuthatch is an amazing bird.

Not only are they acrobatic and fun to watch, but they also have an interesting way of deterring predators.

When building their nests, these nuthatches will often place a crushed insect at the entrance hole. Presumably, this is done to deter predators with the chemical-defense mechanisms from the insect.

However, it is also possible that the nuthatches simply enjoy the taste of bugs!

Either way, it is clear that these birds are intelligent and resourceful.

So, next time you see a White-breasted Nuthatch, be sure to take a closer look. You just might learn something new.

Hummingbirds are incredible creatures! ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿฅณ

Because of their unique, flexible wing joint that rotates in a figure eight, they can easily hover to drink nectar and are the only birds able to sustain flying backwards and upside-down.

Their amazing ability to fly in any direction gives them unparalleled maneuverability, allowing them to zip through the air with ease.

In addition to their aerial acrobatics, hummingbirds are also known for their striking beauty. ๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ˜

With iridescent plumage that shimmers in the sun, these tiny birds are truly a sight to behold. Whether you're lucky enough to see them in your own backyard or in the wild, hummingbirds are sure to impress. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Hummingbirds really are nature's jewels! ๐Ÿ’Ž

At just 4 grams, these diminutive birds are among the smallest in the world. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿผ๐ŸŒŽ

The bee hummingbird, which is the smallest bird in the world, measures a mere 2 inches in length and weighs less than 2 grams.

These tiny birds are fascinating creatures, and they play an important role in their ecosystem. ๐ŸŒฑ

For example, their small size allows them to access nectar that other larger birds cannot reach. In addition, their metabolism is so high that they require constant supplies of food, which helps to pollinate plants. ๐ŸŒท

Despite their tiny size, hummingbirds are brave and determined creatures that are well worth admiring. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’—

Though itโ€™s bold to single out a specific bird species as the best mothers, hummingbirds are definitely at, or near, the top! Hummingbird moms go it alone as male hummingbirds play absolutely no role in building the nest, incubating the eggs or feeding the young. Be sure to add a hummingbird feeder to your yard so you can enjoy these miniscule marvels at work as they prepare to welcome the next generation.

The life of a nesting bird is never easy. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

From predators, to lack of natural habitat, to unstable weather, they work harder than we can imagine just to create a family. ๐Ÿ’—

Thankfully, there are ways we can help them out! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

By planting native plants, providing reliable food and water sources, and installing safe nest boxes, we can make their lives a little bit easier. So let's all do our part to help these beautiful creatures thrive! ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’ฆ

While the addition of red dyes to sugar water may make the feeders more visually appealing to hummingbirds, the long-term health effects of these dyes are not fully known. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Given the volume of nectar that hummingbirds consume every day, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with adding dyes to their diet.

While more research is needed in this area, our recommendation is to have red feeders, not red nectar. ๐Ÿ‘

By avoiding the use of dyes, we can help to ensure the health and safety of these fascinating creatures. ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–

Tufted Titmice are incredible little grey birds. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ฏ

Although they are not ventriloquists, their alarm call seems to fade off into the distance, giving the impression that the bird is moving from one place to another. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ

Birdwatchers and predators alike can be fooled into chasing this ghost call while the titmouse stays securely hidden out of sight. ๐Ÿ‘€

These clever birds are also very social creatures, often forming flocks with other small birds like Chickadees and Nuthatches. ๐Ÿฆ

Tufted titmice are curious and inquisitive, and they're not afraid to investigate new things! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ˜Š

Being seasonally savvy means that you are tuned in to birdsโ€™ seasonal nutritional needs, adjusting your feeding program to suit the seasonal behavior of the birds.

This is a truly seasonal food blend to help you do just that. Nesting SuperBlendโ„ข is a super-boost of protein and calcium for birdsโ€™ nesting & molting needs. Our high protein blend packed full of sunflower chips, peanuts, mealworms, bark butter bits, Nutrasaff, tree nuts and calcium.

This blend is perfect for birds getting ready to nest, while they nest and for the young when they leave the nest. The need for protein and calcium substantially increases for birds during periods of egg-laying as well as nestlingsโ€™ growth. When birds obtain a sufficient amount of protein and calcium, it helps determine the number of eggs produced and impacts the growth rate and health of young birds. The high protein is crucial for muscle and feather development for young birds.

How's the Oriole activity in your yard????

Photos from Wild Birds Unlimited's post 05/10/2022

Did you know that Great Blue Herons nest mainly in trees, but will also nest on the ground, on bushes, in mangroves, and on structures such as duck blinds, channel markers, or artificial nest platforms. Males arrive at the colony and settle on nest sites; from there, they court passing females.

Colonies can consist of 500 or more individual nests which means when you find one nest...you often hit the jackpot!!! ๐ŸŽฐ

Happy Mother's Day! ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿฃ

Photos from Wild Birds Unlimited's post 05/07/2022

In honor of Mother's Day this Sunday, here are a few interesting facts about mother birds! ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ“

โœ… Hummingbird moms: A Hummingbird Motherโ€™s Day provides absolutely NO rest for the weary! ๐Ÿ˜ด Motherโ€™s Day is approaching, and this momma literally does it ALL!

The males are not involved in building the nest or birthing/raising the young, so momma hummingbird is stuck doing all the work around the nest.

She builds the nest by herself out of lichen, plant fibers, and spider webs, lays 1 to 2 eggs that are incubated for 11 โ€“ 18 days and will then feed her young insects and nectar for another 3 weeks before the babies are able to fly for the first time.

โœ… Carolina Wren moms: Let's hear it for the bird world's most loyal mom! A pair bond may form between a male and a female Carolina Wren at any time of the year. The female will stay with him for life, always foraging and moving around within sight of her mate. ๐Ÿฅฐ

โœ…Cowbird moms: Brown-headed Cowbird mothers are the opposite of caring parents. Instead of incubating and raising their own young, they rely on more than 200 different bird species to do it for them. When the mother bird of another species leaves the nest to eat and stretch her wings from incubating, the female cowbird sneaks in and lays her egg with the nestโ€™s existing eggs. The cowbirdโ€™s eggs are tan with dark brown speckles and will look completely different from the other eggs in the nest.

โœ… American Goldfinch moms: American Goldfinch moms are one of the last songbirds to nest each year, waiting until mid-to-late summer when thistle seeds and down are readily available. ๐ŸŒป

Let's hear it for these amazing bird moms! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
