Let's talk about the unspoken, Black Maternal Health! I do not know your story but please know you are not alone. Many women have undergone traumatic experiences during their pregnancy, at the birthing of their child(ren), and days to weeks after that are seldomly talked about. We embrace those moms that are here and honor the moms that have gained their wings. Let's bring more awareness and support to our black women. Listen to your bodies and speak out until you're heard!

🦋 I'm thrilled to announce that I am currently researching and curating a collection of articles and resources for Perinatal Mental Health to be published to my website and blog.

"The joys of being pregnant can tumble down when you realize you will not have a typical pregnancy or birthing experience during a pandemic. The dream baby shower with 100 invited guests, showering you with gifts and congratulatory statements on motherhood, has now turned to drive-bys of waves and masked faces. The hours of shopping for the baby’s first outfit and Christening outfit turns into a lonely online shopping experience. The thoughts of your parents, grandparents, and friends waiting to hold the baby fades because you have to be isolated to keep you and your baby safe from this horrible monster of a virus. Mothers you are not alone! Mothers all over the world are struggling with forced isolation that may increase their anxiety and lead to depression.

Anxiety is a common symptom in pregnancy that many women experience but has doubled during the pandemic.
Many people are not aware of the perinatal mood anxiety disorders (PMADS) that can develope with pregnancy. Some mothers have pre-existing anxiety and depression that gradually increases throughout the pregnancy and worsens after birth. The expected happiness of giving birth may have significantly diminished for you. Not knowing how to cope, along with the added societal expectations that may have conditioned all of us as women to believe once upon a time that every mother is "happy to be pregnant and will automatically fall in love with their baby ". The shame of not being happy to be a mother right now can tug on your mental health and you can secretly sink into guilt."

There are many tools that can be used to help you check in with your self care. These tools can look like taking a walk with your youngest, playing in the backyard with your puppy, and snuggling together with the entire family on cold and rainy January evenings.

Self care does not always have to look like isolation and independence - what is it that makes you feels refreshed?

Hey Mommies! Go visit The Postpartum Clinic, LLC. You can be anywhere not just Alabama. 💕 Speak with the lactation consultant today.

💕 Just in case you all were wondering!

This is an issue. An average pump session is successful and common at 2-4 ounces every 2-3 hours. Most little ones average 1.5-3 ounces per feeding. Remember, ✨TINY TUMMIES + FEEDING/FULL CUES ✨

✨ Some mothers naturally have an over supply and some create an over supply by pumping/nursing more than they need to which makes it more and more difficult to keep up with (which causes stress and we don’t want that!)

✨ It also may make mothers think that baby should be drinking as much as the forth photo (4+ ounces) each session and they shouldn’t be.

✨ It’s normal to have more milk come from one breast than the other but not to the point where you are filling up a bottle. If there is that much milk being made it’s not necessarily safe and can cause engorgement and clogged ducts.

✨ Whether natural or stimulated — to be an over producer, a lactation counselor, consultant, or specialist should be contacted so they can help regulate.

✨This would be an instance where I would suggest sage tea to regulate supply to baby NOT feed the freezer and educate mom on proper pumping scheduling and pace feeding.

Have questions or need support? Visit our website to book a free consult and take out lactation and postpartum support quiz so we can work with you on your needs!

We’re here for you, Mama.
