Funded by USAID and managed by MSU Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security, the Fish Innovation Lab aims to alleviate poverty and improve nutrition through the reliable and inclusive provision of nutrient-rich fish and other aquatic foods.
Our Asia Regional Coordinator, Dr. M. Gulam Hussain, is representing us at a seminar organized by Savor International Limited on "Blue Economy: Integrating Economic Growth and Ocean Health" to be held on November 8 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. For those attending, you don't want to miss Dr. Hussain's presentation titled "Sustainable Fisheries and Mariculture: Enhancing Food Security, Livelihood, and Protecting Marine Ecosystems in Bangladesh."

Our six new one-year activities are underway, and we look forward to seeing them improve aquaculture and fishery systems in Asia and Africa to ultimately !
One activity is scaling fish powder in Zambia, building on previous work under the direction of Kathleen Ragsdale, a research professor at MSU Social Science Research Center and a Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station scientist.

Congrats to Dr. M. Gulam Hussain, one of our Asia regional coordinators! He was recently honored for his contributions to fish genetics by the Eon Group of Industries during its 24th Foundation Day. We are proud to have him on our team as we work to !
Our second session, titled “What is the role of localized in driving collaborative learning?” and moderated by Sarah Rose from USAID focused on three key questions:
1. What is the role of in achieving change and driving learning?
2. How do we organize our work from the beginning to increase learning across Labs?
3. How do we move to more collaborative, inter-disciplinary work?
Our group of expert panelists highlighted real-life examples of successful localization approaches used by Innovation Labs, including the challenges they faced and the solutions they implemented.

The Fish Innovation Lab shared insights from our work and partnerships across Africa and Asia, including in sessions on localization, supporting transformative action of governments, and global partnerships and collaborations. Kudos to Fish Innovation Lab Deputy Director Stephen Reichley, Research and Learning Manager Gina Rico Mendez, and External Advisory Board Member Shakuntala Thilsted for their excellent contributions in these sessions, and tremendous thanks to the Feed the Future Food Systems for Nutrition Innovation Lab for organizing!
Congratulations to our Fisheries Advisor Karen Kent on her new role as Director of International Programs for the URI Coastal Resources Center!🎉 With Kent's extensive experience in international development projects and programs, her knowledge and leadership will be of great value to projects under the Coastal Resources Center's guidance.
Our Africa Regional Coordinators, Drs. Sunil Siriwardena and Andrew Wamukota, are representing the Fish Innovation Lab at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2024 Summit this week!
Dr. Siriwardena participated in the Feed the Future Innovation Lab Council side event on "Socio-Technical Scaling for Transformative Action” on September 2. He joined the other speakers and panelists to share insights from Fish Innovation Lab activities in Nigeria that have engaged the private sector to scale aquaculture innovations.

Our esteemed guests from USAID - US Agency for International Development were able to visit the MAFES H.H. Leveck Animal Research Center Aquaculture Facility during their visit last week. Peter Allen, a professor at the College of Forest Resources, Mississippi State University and our aquaculture advisor, showcased the facility alongside our Deputy Director Dr. Stephen Reichley. Thanks to USAID funding, the Fish Innovation Lab is able to help in the fight to end world hunger!
