The difference is in the details! While I love shower benches, there’s so much usable space that’s otherwise wasted which can make a difference in a smaller bathroom. I framed and built this to accommodate a 12”x10”x36” pull out drawer that I just finished up, complete with a tiled face to blend in with the rest of the half wall. Additionally, I mounted the drawer level but the drawer slides are angled 1.5” over 3’ so that as you pull the drawer out, it raises allowing clearance for a rug in front of it still.
Happy National Tile Day! It's a day I like to pause and celebrate the artistry and creativity that tiles bring into our lives. As I look back on the past year, I'm filled with gratitude for the diverse projects we've had the privilege to work on, including a challenging pillar project for which we received a prestigious Coverings Installation and Design Award. Join me in enjoying the journey through our projects as we share some captivating photos!
Well, it’s close enough to done to post some final photos of my own bathroom remodel. It’s safe to say this is about as custom as you can get, there’s not a single full piece of tile on this project! The wall tiles were originally 24”x48” natural stone tiles cut down to 16”x48” for an optimal layout and to use the cutoffs for wrapping all the horizontal surfaces and making the square wainscoting caps. The floor tile is actually the same as the wall tile but we had 6 noticeably darker tiles which wouldn’t have blended well with the rest of the wall tile so we cut those 6 pieces down into 115 individual 4”x16” pieces, sanded all the edges and installed in a herringbone pattern. The shower floor started as 20sf of stone mosaic tile which was pulled from the sheets and handset individually into this sweeping spiral design. There’s over 120 linear feet of mitered stone tile in this bathroom for all the corners and to top it off we added recessed led lighting in the shower ceiling, niche & under the vanity! What an amazing transformation!

Last night was an incredible night and the pinnacle of our careers to date. Now that the awards ceremony has been held and the winners have been officially recognized, I can finally & publicly announce that we have won a CID award for this project in the category of technical excellence. The CID awards are some of the highest awards given out in the industry and we are beyond blessed to have even been considered for such an honor. I’d like to congratulate the other winners and thank our friends in the tile community for sharing your time, wisdom, tricks of the trade & for pushing Bob Shinn & I these past few years especially, we wouldn’t have been able to get to this level without your help and guidance. I can never repay some of you but will do my best to pay it forward.
Feel free to read up more about this project in the Tile Artisan magazine in which we were highlighted:https://digital.tileletter.com/tileletter-artisan-spring-2023
It’s National Tile day! Feel free to check out some of the work we’ve been lucky enough to be a part of this past year!
This project kicked our butts a bit and aside from epoxying the mitered corners it’s all done and ready for glass and plumbing. Lots of details went into this between the 50 linear feet of mitered tile edges and hand setting over 1100 individual stones on the shower floor but I think the extra time and attention was worth it!
I don’t know nor do I want to know how many individual pebbles I handset for this shower pan but one thing is for sure, there’s no sheet lines from premade mosaic sheets! Current bathroom remodel in the works.
Just wrapped up the finishing details around the niche today on the latest tub to shower conversion that we finished last week for some great clients. Vertical stacked wavy subway tile, custom niche with mitered edges, single slope pan with a full wall length linear drain. Classy!
75% of the shower projects we do are being replaced prematurely due to installation failures which isn’t too surprising considering there is no license or oversight required to install tile in MN. There were many things wrong with this shower that we tore out today which ultimately caused it to fail but I wanted to highlight the difference between improperly set tile done by the previous installer and a properly set tile I installed on another project, do you see the difference? When done right, a tile installation will be a one time cost and will look beautiful for decades to come, when done wrong it can be costly and cause untold damage to other parts of your house. Be careful on who you hire for your next tile project.
This client had originally told me they had some small format tile they wanted installed so I figured they would be mesh mounted mosaics but upon seeing the tile in person I realized they were all highly inconsistent loose laid handmade tiles. As much fun as it would be to handset over 800 single tiles on the wall while fighting gravity, spacers and my sanity trying to keep my lines straight I decided instead to turn them into 15 mosaic panels measuring about 21”x42” to make the install easier and more consistent. Voilà!
Tired of trying to do your own home projects but really want to get that bathroom remodeled? Give us a call, we only have a few spots left for this year so act fast!
Did you know that there are no licenses or oversight required for the flooring & tile trade in MN? There’s more training required, licenses to obtain and more oversight to become a hairdresser than it does for someone to put your shower together which is a bit concerning…..and hair grows back if you mess up! Please use these questions next time you’re looking to hire someone for your tile project to make sure your installers are qualified!
Qualified tile contractors have verifiable experience and use proper methods and materials. But, how do you know your contractor is qualified? Here are 13 questions you should ask, and what to look for: zcu.io/WU6B
We’ve been eager to reveal this project which has definitely been one of the more technical and skill challenging projects we’ve ever done! Our client asked if we could wrap a metallic 3D tile around the pillars and cabinet backs which is no easy feat. The only way to cleanly miter this tile so the pattern wrapped around the corners was to miter them along the “valleys” between the raised cube patterns which meant we had to work backwards and determine what size the rough framing of the pillars had to be in order for that to happen. A total of 11 days were spent mitering 215 linear feet of tile edges, scaffold building, reframing, prepping and installing the tile for this project and this wonderful client is extremely happy with how it turned out!
Some days we get a ton of tile set, other days we get 6 pieces cut & installed 😂. This is why our prices are not based on square footage but rather the time involved to do the work. These two narrow pieces took over an hour each to cut, miter the outside corner, scribe the inside corner to the 3D profile of the adjacent piece and notch around the countertop. The details can make all the difference in the finished product.
A behind the scenes look as to how our shower pans are prepped, packed, formed, waterproofed and flood tested to ensure no leaks. Video is slowed down a bit so you can see what we’re doing 😉.
Sneak peak of the project we just started! This is going to look amazing!
From ordinary to extraordinary! It’s amazing the transformation that some stone and tile can make on an area, it’s probably one of the things I love most about my profession. Just wrapped up this project using 12x24 porcelain floor tile with in-floor heat, stacked stone and custom built niches with LED accent lighting.
Fun little backsplash we just wrapped up! I tell my clients to never be too afraid to add some color and design to your home and to tailor it to suit your style, after all, you’re the one who sees it everyday, why not love your space!
It’s national tile day! (Yes, it’s a thing!)
“If you love your work, you'll be out there every day trying to do it the best you possibly can, and pretty soon everybody around will catch the passion from you - like a fever”. Feel free to check out some of our projects we’ve completed over the past year!
Level is desired but flat is required when it comes to setting large format tile, and if you’re good, you can get both! This basement slab was pretty uneven, had settled in a few spots and was out of plane by as much as 7/8” but nothing that 33 bags of self flattening cement couldn’t fix. It’s now within 1/16” over 40’ and ready for tile!
Pictures don’t capture the sparkle of this 4x12 mirror edged glass tile backsplash but trust me, it shines like diamonds! Last finished project of the year.
Another bathroom knocked off the to do list, just one more backsplash to install and that will be a wrap for this year.
From crooked studs to flat walls, completely waterproofed and flood tested in 8hrs. This shower is ready for tile!
Done with phase 1 of this bathrrom until the countertops, niche and window pieces are ready. 24”x48” tile on the walls, 12”x24” marble on the floors running into a curbless shower pan & in floor heat throughout. Doesn’t get much more technically challenging than that!
We’re usually on to the next project by the time the glass and other plumbing fixtures are installed but man do they finish off the project nicely! Check out the before and after pictures of this beautiful transformation!
