ICYMI: you can find my work at Birchbark Books and Native Arts in Minneapolis too!
One of the largest lessons that I have learned from the last few years is the need to read and research multiple perspectives of the same story, same events, same turmoil.

I am preparing for a lecture that I am giving this fall and I am taking this lesson to heart by researching not just European settlers in America from the European-American perspective, but am also taking the time to learn about the Indigenous perspective on European settlement written by Indigenous authors. I want to gain as much understanding and present that information to fellow researchers.

One place I am gaining that knowledge is by supporting an Indigenous bookstore in Minnesota called Birchbark Books and Native Arts founded by Louise Erdrich, one of my favorite authors! Sifting through the pages of their website has me creating lists of books I want to read and purchase to provide the context I want to understand present the fullest picture I can!

Until I can get there in person, I will be digging through the store's website and you should, too! https://birchbarkbooks.com/

Governor Tony Evers stopped in to visit Arcadia Books today. We gave him a copy of "The Sentence", a book we can't stop raving about. Ms. Erdrich, thank you for writing the most incredible book that we keep putting in everyone's hands!
I found and read 'The Roundhouse' while visiting a friend back in September. I thought it was great; had never read anything by Louise Erdrich. After I finished it I started to read reviews of it at various place online. I was surprised that no one had compared it to another great American novel 'True Grit' by Charles Portis. Portis, a man, tells his story from the viewpoint of a 14 year old girl. Erdrich, a woman, tells her story from the viewpoint of a 13 year old boy. Both stories are about seeking justice when the laws of the society won't or can't help. Both stories are about seeking revenge for a crime commited against the parent of the protagonist. Both stories are about the price of that search for revenge/justice: In True Grit Mattie loses an arm and in the end the man who helped her achieve her goal. In The Roundhouse Joe loses his best friend who is also the person who helped him acheive his goal. There was a lot of similarity in other ways too; humor, the particular language of the place and time in which each story takes place. Both of them are great. I'm looking forward to reading more of Erdrich's books and just ordered something from Birchbark.

"I Love You No Matter What: Writing with Unconditional Love about Family History and Women's Lives"

Join us Tuesday, June 14th, at 7:00pm CST for a reading and discussion centered around the book Seven Aunts (University of Minnesota Press) by Grand Marais author Staci Lola Drouillard.

- Registration in comments.
- Pre-order Seven Aunts on our website today!
---
Part memoir, part cultural history, these memories of seven aunts holding home and family together tell a crucial, often overlooked story of women of the twentieth century

Seven Aunts is an inspired patchwork of memoir and reminiscence, poetry, testimony, love letters, and family lore. In this multifaceted, unconventional portrait, Staci Lola Drouillard summons ways of life largely lost to history and reveals the true heart and soul of that history: women who defied expectations and overwhelming odds to make a place in the world for the next generation.

Staci Lola Drouillard, a descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Anishinaabe, lives and works in her hometown of Grand Marais, Minnesota, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Her first book, Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe (Minnesota, 2019) won the Hamlin Garland Prize in Popular History and the Northeast Minnesota Book Award for nonfiction and was a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award.

Join us this Friday, May 6th, at 7:00pm CST to celebrate the wonderful Our Stories Carried Us Here: A Graphic Novel Anthology!

Meet the artists and storytellers that contributed to this beautiful and poignant volume.

Green Card Voices presents a bold and unconventional collection of ten stories told and illustrated by immigrants and refugees living across the United States. Stanford scientist, deaf student, indigenous activist, Black entrepreneur--all immigrants and refugees--recount journeys from their home countries in ten vibrantly illustrated stories. Faced by unfamiliar vistas, they are welcomed with possibilities and confronted by challenges and prejudice. Timely, sobering, and insightful, Our Stories Carried Us Here acts as a mirror and a light to connect us all with immigrant and refugee experiences.

Participants will include Amara Solomon Kamara, Mary Anne and Sergio Quiroz, and Ashraf El-Attar.

This is a Zoom event. Registration link in comments below!

One thousand friends and kin: Remembering the generous spirit of artist Jim Denomie 03/05/2022

One thousand friends and kin: Remembering the generous spirit of artist Jim Denomie

"I see him traveling to his world of flying horses and tree people, of urban skyscrapers turned to plateaus, of woodlands filled with vividly hued mushrooms and rabbits, of female figures reclining not in a landscape but as land itself, as Earth Woman. I see Jim crossing the deep blue underpainting of a canvas finally big enough for him, an infinite canvas, a bridge of images."

A wonderful, moving tribute to Jim Denomie in the Star Tribune, written by Heid E. Erdrich.

One thousand friends and kin: Remembering the generous spirit of artist Jim Denomie An appreciation of the late artist Jim Denomie, by one of those friends.

03/04/2022

A note from Louise. We will miss Jim greatly.

This is Medicine Bear, by Jim Denomie, an Anishinaabe artist and friend. Jim died this week, and while his four day fire still burns I want to acknowledge his utter originality, his hard work, his killer wit, his mystery. He created visionary worlds and showed extraordinary kindness in this one. He took good care of people and paid attention to young artists, including my daughters. He was a friend of the bookstore, and when his shows opened down the street at Bockley Gallery, joyous crowds spilled into the street. Our hearts go out to his family and our thoughts are with everyone who also loved and was inspired by him.
Miigwech always, Jim. Love, Louise
