Fast response times are a necessity when the gig is happening and the Leslie doesn't work. Ricky Peterson called me today at 3:45 and I was at the Dakota in less than one hour. Oh my goodness... I spent time with Dave on the road with Shred is Dead, and he's one of the best I've ever toured with. This is horrible news for he and his family and pets. Including the non-human persons who died and have been displaced. Prayers up!

A couple shots of the custom made Hammond portable Minnesota Chop we did recently for long time client, Sam Hankey. This is a CV cabinet that we saved from doom and destruction, and gave it a new life as a sweet custom chop for Sam! The cabinet had a very hard life, and thus the lower part was not worth saving, for those who might object to chopping it. Notice how the walnut inside panels and cheek blocks have been meticulously refinished to beautiful perfection. We also performed our trademark brass buffing and lacquering to the brass screws, which adds a very nice, classy custom touch. The organ within is a 1965 Hammond A-100 that Sam has owned for years. We have it on display at El Diablo Amps and Guitars in Northeast Minneapolis. The prototype unit is not for sale, but it is a great demonstration of the sound produced by this custom, hand built effects unit.

What is this mysterious contraption? It’s a pre-production “Scanner” built by Analog Outfitters and on loan from our friend Rich (Minnesota Organ Service). What does it do? Well, in short, it’s a vibrato/reverb unit (with a full-sized spring reverb pan). But the way it achieves the vibrato effect is quite ingenious and unique sounding (more on that in a bit). Given its size and price point, we know this is a rather specialized piece of kit, but if you are a studio owner or gear aficionado, you really owe it to yourself to stop by the shop and hear this thing in person.

The scanner vibrato was developed by Laurens Hammond in 1935 by feeding the audio signal into a analog delay line, creating 9 phase-shifted copies of the original. These signals are applied to capacitive plates mounted inside the scanner assembly and a rotating armature then “picks up” the phase shifted signals producing a rich and unique vibrato/chorus effect. The speed of the trem is controlled by a DC brushless motor which can be hooked up to an expression pedal.

The footswitch allows you to select between Reverb/Tremolo, both, or “dry” signal only. The unit also features a pad switch on the ¼” input, XLR line-in/line-out, a line output attenuator, a 4 pin XLR switching jack, and a ¼” TRS input for the expression pedal.
