At Wings Credit Union, membership is more than joining. It is belonging. It is community. To show up for their community, Wings Credit Union recently sponsored a care cart for our healthcare team. Gestures like this remind our team members that their commitment to healthier communities is appreciated. We are thankful for our kind neighbor!

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Do you know what the four lobes of the brain do? Part 3.

The Parietal lobe sits at the crown of your head and is where you process sensory information. This lobe is home to your sensory strip; where your sense of touch, pain and temperature are. Thanks to this area of the brain you’re able to feel the softness of a baby’s skin and the bitter cold of a Minnesota winter.

"Can we build a clinic that is trauma healing?" After the East Lake Clinic was destroyed in the George Floyd riots, it was time to rebuild. The clinic and its team would rely on trauma-informed care to guide its rebirth - to create a model that would defy traditional healthcare and be so bold as to heal the team, its patients and community. Watch the East Lake Clinic story.

Luisa Rodriguez Duran, RN – Positive Care Clinic

“Knowing that we are a positive force for patients and their families is rewarding. We offer rapid access appointments for patients who need it. Maybe someone is newly diagnosed with HIV, or they’ve been out of care for a long time, or they’ve just moved to the Twin Cities. It’s critical that these new patients get into care as soon as possible. In a rapid access appointment, they’re not just seeing a provider. They’re seeing a pharmacist, a social worker, and a benefits counselor. Not every patient may need those services, but they are accessible.

I feel gratitude when I hear heartfelt responses from patients expressing that they couldn’t navigate their journey alone and that they appreciate the compassionate care. It reminds me that providing high-quality care isn’t done by just one person but by our whole team. Every little work that we do every day is meaningful.”

Hennepin Healthcare Foundation is proud to highlight authentic stories from the wide variety of human beings who connect with our mission. Follow more Humans of Hennepin Healthcare at hennepinhealthcare.org/humans.

Dr. John Hick is an emergency physician who also serves as Deputy Chief Medical Director for Hennepin EMS and Medical Director for Emergency Preparedness at HCMC. He recently was interviewed by MPR News about his thoughts from five years ago when the COVID-19 arrived in Minnesota.

Dr. John Hick saw Minnesota’s busiest emergency department fill with patients, many struggled to breathe. Five years later, health care is still dealing with the pandemic’s aftermath.

Give us a hand (or arm) to advance medical education and patient care!

The Sim Center, which offers free training for all our medical staff, is fundraising for a new ultrasound IV arm simulator that allows learners to practice placing IVs with the guidance of an ultrasound. This task trainer would replace an outdated version that the Sim Center has been using since it opened in 2013.

With the help of a new trainer, our team members can improve their skills for a better patient experience.
