We can talk about chakras, energy flow, intuition and psychic tools of awareness, but all in all, the purpose of life is to recognize who we truly are, to share and express our unique self out into the world. It begins with body/mind/spirit health and awareness.

Stress Relief Time!

Full disclosure. My stress level was up, so I took out the coloring book. The simple act of coloring allows the body to rest and the mind to focus within the present moment.

Contemplation for Stress Relief

• Choose a design that reminds you of being in nature.*
• As you take in a cleansing breath, imagine the nature elements that feel calming, comforting and secure. Do the rooted trees and plants help you feel grounded and present? Does the owl remind you of your inner wisdom?
• Choose colors that you associate with the qualities you’d like to experience today. What color supports a sense of security? Is there a color that encourages you to soften your muscles and release tension?
• Perhaps you need a total break from any sort of structure. Color however you please. Draw inside or outside of the lines.
• Allow yourself to have no expectations. Simple enjoy the experience and witness what evolves out of non-judgement.
• When finished for the time being, welcome in another cleansing breath and put a smile on our face.

Summer Heat Cool Down

With the summer heat and soaring temperatures felt by many in the northern hemisphere, let’s get out our Contemplations in Color books and color for cool!

Contemplation to Cool
• Choose a design that invites ease, a calm sense of mind or one that reminds you of cooling water, ice crystals or even snow!*
• Pick out the “cool” tones within the color spectrum: blues, greens, purples.
• As you pick up a new color, enjoy a deep breath and imagine experiencing a fresh, cool breeze.
• On the exhale, imagine any excess of heat felt in the body, dropping down, as though you have roots deep into the earth, allowing the heat to rejoin the earth’s molten core layer.
• Let the cool colors remind you of cooling waters, ice crystals and/or shady spots under trees.
• By allowing yourself this time to color, may you feel the benefits of a rested, settled body and mind. May you feel refreshed as you bring the “cool” back into your awareness.

It’s week 26th of Contemplations in Color and we’re all about Validation. One of the most effective ways of validating oneself or another is to communicate, share and express. The simple act of saying “Hello” provides for validation of being! This recognition may brighten someone’s day or relieve pains of isolation or depression. Both the sender and receiver benefit when unique gifts of spirit are shared, be it music, culinary skills, compassion, technical expertise, art, philanthropy, a listening ear. We each have unique ways of being in this world, so let’s celebrate you! We encourage you to share your gifts, communicate your truth and allow yourself to receive from others, recognition and validation in return.

Contemplation to Communicate, Express & Share
• Choose a design that you are drawn to for whatever reason in this moment*.
• As you pick up a color, affirm to yourself a quality or attribute that you like about yourself. In the least, you can give yourself credit for showing up to color today!
• Let your next color prompt you to become mindful of some communication you wish to share, either with yourself, such as more affirmations, or to share with another. Would you like to say hello to a neighbor, the next stranger you pass or the beautiful flower?
• Whenever you feel complete with coloring, decide to share it with another. Tell someone about your experience. What have you learned about yourself these past six months? Make a card out of your art design and send a note to a friend. Use the paper as gift wrap. Frame your art for display. Share a photo on social media.
• Enjoy the experience of discovering, expressing, and communicating your inner truth and unique gifts of being spirit/body/mind. What a great trio for self-discovery and life fulfilment!

There’s no way around it. Life involves change. Minimal change may feel comfortable, content, stagnant or boring. Big change may feel exciting or dreadfully overwhelming. Whether we choose to make a shift or are pushed into change, these times are opportunities for growth and healing. It’s important to recognize and validate when we are in these “growth periods.” As we become more aware of the process of personal and spiritual development and healing, we can better navigate the waters of change, witness our reactions, and optimally respond to life. The turbulent waters of change may no longer swoop us into murk and debris. Rather, using tools of awareness, we can learn to ride the tidal wave of change and move through our growth periods with greater ease, neutrality, amusement and grace.

Contemplation to Validate Your Growth
• Find a design that represents movement, flow, change or growth*.
• Think of/feel into an experience that has recently changed, is about to change, or you’d like to change within your day, week, life: career, home, relationship, the weather, your attitude, hair style. Whatever!
• Decide that any projections, fear, anxiety, excitement, anticipation or other expectations around this change will come to the surface of awareness like air bubbles rising up to the surface of water.
• Pick a color to represent the emotions you’re allowing yourself to see bubble up.
• By acknowledging the memories/emotions that bubble to the surface, we are creating space to shift mental/emotional energy, whether to clear and release or to fuel and drive creative intentions to the next level.
• Resisting and suppressing the bubbles of change can create more turbulence. It’s like trying to swim against the current; whereas, awareness of what’s bubbling up, facilitates the flow of change, easing our growth periods as we navigate the best path forward.

Validation is acknowledging worth. It is accepting what is, as it is. On the other hand, judgement, competition, and expectation tend to dismiss, divide and limit. Have you ever judged yourself unworthy because you weren’t as good at/as (fill in the blank)? Have you ever expected communication from a friend, only to feel disappointed because it wasn’t wrapped up in the shiny bow of love and forgiveness you had anticipated? Or perhaps you were expecting a friend to arrive off the train wearing red, but you walk right past them because they wore green. Expectation is a hindrance to fully having/experiencing who/what is in present time. In expectation, we unknowingly invalidate/dismiss what we DO experience in comparison to our expected experience. Validation, on the other hand, is the ability to fully have in awareness, who and what is present. Once we no longer resist or dismiss what is, healing begins.

Contemplation to Free-up Expectation
• Find a simple design or one with open spaces that feels less contained*.
• Before coloring, welcome in a deep breath.
• Decide you can let go of any expectations you may have about coloring.
• Any duration is fine. Colors have open/no meanings. There are no rules to follow.
• Allow yourself the gift of surprise, awe and discovery as you witness your coloring process.
• Give yourself the space to receive your experience, however it appears in the moment.

June’s Contemplations in Color is about Validation. Fulfilled living begins in present time. Often our attention goes elsewhere, ruminating about past wrongs or anxiously anticipating a future scenario. We may rob ourselves of the time and space necessary to experience life fully. Our creative energy scatters among the many needs of the physical and mental body that we forget to acknowledge the more capable show runner, that being our spirit awareness. In our haste, we may leap to the cliff of “to do’s”, grasping for dear life. All the while via present awareness, we could activate our inner compass, directing us to the steady foot bridge complete with instructions, guides, and safety gear. So, let’s adjust our pace towards presence and begin to validate our inner compass. We don’t need to see the whole journey to begin our progress. All we need in present time, is simply the one next step. Validate the one. The next becomes apparent. One step at a time.

Contemplation on Next Steps
• Find a design that is simple or reminds you of steps*.
• In life, we cannot do everything, everywhere, all at once. Same goes for coloring. Ask yourself, “Where does this color want to go onto the page?” Then follow through.
• Rather than try to imagine the finished product, ask yourself the next step. What color do I use next? Same or different? Make it so.
• Exercise this “asking for next steps” as you color. Validate your awareness of the answer by either following through or deciding otherwise. The choice is always yours to make, but now you are making a more conscious choice.
• With practice, we can awaken to our inner guidance and intuition, learning that the one often ignored small step is the next significant step on your path of development.

It’s time to celebrate new growth with enthusiasm! This month’s focus has been on cultivating health and quality of life. We’ve planted seeds of intention, nourished progress by establishing optimal routines, engaged discernment to release stagnation and establish boundaries. We’ve practiced returning to our center within the cycles of life experience. Now we get to witness the sprouting of development.
Growth periods can be full of both ease and growing pains. Change may feel uplifting and refreshing; but it may also feel unsettling and uncomfortable. Such is the way of living a full life within the balance of yin/yang; yet, whatever the case may be presenting, we can have enthusiasm, knowing that growth is occurring. Let’s celebrate our growing pains and joy this spring as we welcome new opportunities for health and quality of life.

Contemplation on Enthusiasm
• Choose a design that inspires, brings joy, or represents growth and opportunity*.
• Allow yourself to play and explore with color.
• Pick vibrant colors to represent aspects of growth and change you are starting to recognize.
• Use subtle colors to validate the qualities that are still incubating in the quiet rich soil of potential, yet to be seen, felt, and realized more fully.
• Any stage of growth and development can occur throughout this experience we call life. Allow yourself to have enthusiasm for your ability to recognize what it is you are experiencing, right now. Acknowledgement is foundational for healing to occur.

Health and quality of life are cultivated via rhythms and patterns. As we discern optimal actions of body and mind, we circle back and repeat the steps that bring about desired results. We might think of growth and development like a flower. Our true nature resides within, at the center of the flower, the center of awareness. Life experiences are the petals of the flower. We expand out into the world of experience to explore, learn, and develop. As we return to center, we integrate new awareness, “re-cognizing” ourselves anew. In this way, the circle of life experiences is more of a spiral movement of growth. Though things may appear similar, it is only within the present, the “new” now, in which our truth is known.

Contemplation to Return to Center
• Choose either a spiral design or a design with a center focus*.
• Use your breath to become aware of your body. Notice your breathing.
• Acknowledge your heart center by placing a hand on your heart. Release any shoulder and/or jaw tension.
• Awareness is the “driver” of your body/mind. Imagine awareness resides in the center of your head, behind your eyes.
• Every time you pick up a new color, repeat the above 3 prompts: Breathe. Acknowledge. Be Aware.
• Despite what the body/mind may or may not be experiencing, say “hello” to the wisdom and love that is within your true nature.
• Throughout your day, imagine hitting the “reset” button to Return to Center. Return to Wholeness. Return to Inner Peace and Joy.

Contemplations in Color:

In cultivating a thriving garden, it’s necessary to maintain nutrients and space by pulling weeds. Likewise, for health and life fulfilment, it is necessary to practice discernment. By cultivating discernment, we begin to identify what is beneficial verses, what is unnecessary, disruptive, or even destructive to our purpose and intentions for health and quality of life. Once the “weeds” of life are identified, we can take the appropriate steps towards greater balance.

Contemplation on Discernment
• Choose a design that has some complexity*.
• Before coloring, mindfully take in the design. Notice if it has curved lines or straight lines. Recognize open spaces or contained spaces, abstract or concrete imagery.
• Begin to discern what qualities you like and do not like about the design.
• Choose to color the portions you are drawn to while leaving the rest untouched and free of your attention.
• Notice if you feel relief or tension by exercising discernment. Discernment is a precursor towards establishing healthy boundaries. As we practice the art of saying “no,” we create more space to experience our inner truth, wisdom, and certainty.

Contemplations in Color: May, Week 2

In cultivating a garden of health, after planting seeds of intention, we next need to provide nourishment for health and development. Establishing a healthy routine provides the opportunity to regulate body systems. Using the foundational check points for stress relief, diet/nutrition and sleep can help you identify next steps towards greater health and quality of life.

Contemplation on Nourishment
• Choose a design that reminds you to establish healthy patterns and rhythms in your day, optimizing sleep, nutrition, and stress-relief*.
• As you color, consider what foods to include or lessen within your diet to optimize health and balance. Spring is a great time to nourish the body with fresh leafy greens!
• Pick a color that feels soothing. Imagine tension softening and releasing out of the muscles. Allow the mind to reset towards clarity.
• Choose another color that inspires the breath. Mindfully breathe as you color your design.
• As you fill your page with color, imagine soaking in the colors as light rays nourishing your body and mind for optimal function, health, and balance.
• As you then move about your day, let this contemplation prompt you to take the actions to foster nourishment of body / mind and validation of spirt.

Cultivation is the theme for May’s Contemplations in Color. To cultivate greater health and quality of life, it’s necessary to identify goals and intentions you’d like to nurture. Intentions are like the planting of fulfilment seeds into the garden of life. In preparing the soil, we may need to churn up old belief systems to begin anew. Perhaps we need to change habits of stagnation, open up new space in our schedule that fosters movement, growth, and development.

Contemplation on Seeds of Intention
• Pick a design that reminds you of a garden*.
• As you color a flower, for example, assign an intention you have for yourself.
• Are you focused on physical/mental health? Are you planting seeds of a new career path? How would a garden of fulfilling relationships begin to grow?
• Use this time of mindful coloring to prepare your “soil of life fulfilment.” Laying a fresh foundation for growth and development begins one step at a time. Take intentional breaths first thing in the morning. Put your hand on your heart and acknowledge yourself with care.
• This is your garden of intentions for life fulfilment. What seeds are important to you? Though small as a seed may be, within it may be the blueprint of a grand fruit bearing tree, standing strong and steady, providing shade, shelter, nourishment, oxygen, and beauty. All that, born within the darkness of potential, from the one carefully cultivated seed.

April is Amusement Month. Amusement is a tool that helps us experience the ups and downs in life without losing site of the horizon that is our wholeness of being. Rather than be churned or swallowed by the tumultuous waters of change, we are learning to surf, to ride the ebb and flow of life patterns and cycles with greater ease and joy.

We’ve been welcoming opportunities to play, release judgement, be unbound by expectation. We’re practicing neutrality, increasing our capacity to have more of what life has to offer. Doesn’t this feel a lot like freedom?

Today’s Contemplation in Color combines it all to celebrate freedom. Freedom to laugh. Freedom to cry. Freedom to laugh even while crying an ocean of tears.
