With the police controversy in Minneapolis perhaps the people may be interested in reading my book "Motion for Justice: I Rest My Case" where I wrote about police corruption issues and how the Department of Justice protects out of control rogue police. I even wrote about an incident when a police officer from the Valparaiso Indiana Police Department falsely arrested me and put his knee into my back in the back seat of a squad car with my hands cuffed behind my back and I couldn't breathe all the way to the police station where I was taken and brutalized. John Bolton was an assistant attorney general who was in charge of the so called civil rights investigation and covered for the rogue police.
"We opened our shop 45 years ago because we love the personal contact it allows with customers," Mary Laurie (James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers (A.B.A.A.)) said Monday.

"We learn from them every day. We have bemoaned the internet for taking this away from us. In the face of this virus we have found that the internet is actually an ally. Today I am grateful for the e-mails and purchases that have been made on the internet with notes of support for what we are doing."

Buddy is a 5-month-old Yorkshire Terrier puppy who’s with his owners most days at James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers (A.B.A.A.). He’ll be able to roam the store freely once they’re certain he won’t bite or soil any books—or follow any customers out the door.

He’s the successor to Teddy, another Yorkie who died last summer at the age of 17. The owners picked up Buddy a few months later. “It dawned on me that I don’t want to live without a dog,” said James Laurie.

Customers have taken note of how attached the Lauries are to their dogs. “Don Shelby said, ‘How do you keep from spoiling your dog?’,” said James. “And Mary said, ‘Well that’s easy, we just give him everything he wants.’”

James and Mary Laurie Booksellers is a used, rare, and out of print bookstore. We also have many classical and jazz vinyl records, and a wonderful selection of graphic art.

We are located in the downtown Minneapolis area. Over the years our inventory has grown to more than 120,000 volumes of individually selected fine books in many fields. We also have an expansive selection of antiquarian printed maps and prints that will be available on our website soon. Our inventory of 30,000 used classical and jazz vinyl records is also available for browsing. James and Mary Lau

Update: We’re still here. We’re still staying safe. We’re still shipping. Our 50% off sale is ongoing.

When you purchase a book off of our website (http://www.lauriebooks.com), the money goes directly to us, and quickly. Obviously the same is true when you call in and we take payment over the phone. We also sell on some larger websites, and they take a percentage and pay us a few weeks later. We appreciate those orders too, however it’s important to do business as directly as possible these days. We’re doing our best to support other local businesses as directly as possible, and we appreciate everyone doing the same.

We’ve shipped 105 packages out since lockdown, and many of them were full of multiple books. Our doors remain closed, and we’re doing a fraction of our normal business (and at a lower profit margin than ever before) but it seems like people are reading. We’re shipping more reading copies than collector’s items, and it feels like important work to us.

Don’t see what you want on our website? We only have a fraction of our inventory catalogued. Call (612-338-1114) or email us ([email protected]). Many people have been calling in and discussing their tastes and interests, and we’ve been sending them parcels full of books to suit. Let us throw a few extra items for you and your loved ones in the mail.

Another update: Meet the shop dog Buddy. This is his social media debut. We're sorry you can't come visit him. With the "shelter in place" order in effect in Minnesota, we're keeping the doors closed and doing our part to "flatten the curve." It gets a bit lonely without our customers and community members coming in to visit us, but on the upside- we're sure getting a lot done. We've never offered such prompt email response, or speedy turnaround on shipping. We're cataloging and listing books at a steady clip with new listings every day. We're truly in unprecedented times. We're getting books out via mail and curbside pickup to help people through their isolation, and your support is keeping us in business. We really appreciate you. We have 100,000+ unique items, and as such only about 20% of our inventory is on our website. If you don't see (or know) what you want, just give us a call at 612-338-1114. We'll check the shelves and/or catacombs. We're happy to hear about your taste in books and make recommendations, and we'd also just love to hear how you're doing. We're still shipping domestically for free, and we've decided to extend the sale a bit more to show our gratitude. Everything on our website (www.Lauriebooks.com) is discounted 50% and we are honoring the same discount with email and call in orders. We're also offering gift cards on our website in various increments, and we're happy to customize as well. Keep flattening the curve. Keep supporting small businesses. Thank you for everything, and stay safe. @ James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers (A.B.A.A.)

Another update: Our old motto was “Save a tree. Buy an old book.” We’re considering changing it to “Save an old bookseller. Stay the heck home.”

Jim was born in ’45, a few years before Mary. When you look at the casualties already- we’re among the many who are at great risk here. As such we’re closing our doors to the public, and taking every precaution while getting orders ready to ship. We appreciate all the businesses and people that are making tough choices, staying home, and doing their part to keep our communities safe.

A new customer came into our store a few days ago and bought a few items. Jim offered a discount, as our sale is still technically running. Our young new friend politely declined, and said that it was important for them to support independent retailers and booksellers. It’s going to be really hard, and small business can’t stay in business without you. We appreciate you.

We still have thousands of books. We’d really like it if you stayed home instead of spreading this virus. We’re still going to work (for now). We can open the doors by appointment, and with appropriate precautions. We can ship you and your family a box full of books. Our sale will remain running, and our shipping is free domestically. If there’s an economic strain for you- call us anyway, and we’ll do what we can. If you’re in a position to support us and other independent businesses- it’s more important and appreciated than ever.

We’ve put gift certificates on our website (http://www.lauriebooks.com). Help us stay afloat and out of harm’s way, and prepare for a shopping spree once this unfortunate unpleasantness is all over. Buy a gift certificate for a friend and tell them to call us. We’ll keep them stocked in reading material. Email us (mailto:[email protected]). Call us (612-338-1114). We’re here. Thank you for the kind messages, calls, emails, and comments.

COVID-19 Update: James and Mary Laurie Booksellers is a family business, and we’ve been selling books since the 70s. We care about your safety, and we need your help. We’re also in the at risk demographics, as are many of our customers. We take this very seriously.

We’re still keeping an open shop (for now), but please don’t be offended if we keep our distance if you visit. Please don’t visit if you’re feeling any symptoms. Call us instead! We ship daily. Please visit CDC websites, and take all appropriate measures to help slow the spread of the virus. Not everyone is of the same risk level for this virus, but we all have a role in protecting our communities.

Life is gonna change for a bit here! Our business has already been impacted. We’re already washing our hands and taking all appropriate measures for our own safety. We’ll also be spending more time at home, making a concerted effort to be in less crowded spaces, and doing our part to help slow the spread of this disease. We’ll not just doing that for our own safety, but for that of our customers. We take this very seriously, and we hope you do too.

We’re going to be focusing on our online and mail-order business for a bit. We still have to keep the lights on, and we think people need books now more than ever. Luckily: we have over 100,000 titles in our shop. We want to supply the community with books and records to pass the time while we all help minimize the impact of this virus.

We’ll be offering FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING immediately on all books, and we’re also here to recommend titles. Only a fraction of our inventory is online so call, email, or send a message. We can pick out a stack for you and send it wherever you’d like. We appreciate everyone’s efforts in minimizing the impact of this virus, and we recognize the impact it may have on your life. Thank you.
