βNone of our students realized that q***r elders over 50 existed. They thought they were all dead."
And that's exactly why we are celebrating our Wisconsin LGBTQ elders with projects like Beacons of Brew City:
Thank you to The lgbtq+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project for breaking down generational barriers in Chicago. Our community needs to stop seeing age as a curse or burden, and start seeing age as an honor and privilege that not everyone gets. Being an elder should be a point of pride! π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ
Q***r elders reflect on LGBTQ+ Pride and intergenerational connections in 2026 βWhatβs important about connecting across generations is that thereβs this exchange of passion and energy. Having the opportunity to share that knowledge is essential during these times,β says Norma Seledon with Equality Illinois.

Every year, we are thrilled to see SO many diverse, beautiful, and excited people at the Milwaukee Pride Parade. Thank you to Dr. Cormac Kehoe for capturing the faces of our vibrant community in this annual photo series. π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ

We're proud to support the next generation of Wisconsin LGBTQ historians. Meet our summer intern, Noah (he/him,) who joins us from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire now through September. Noah introduces himself in his own words:
"Hi! I am pursuing my Masters of Public History, currently doing my thesis on the relationship between AIDS activists in Wisconsin and the state government. The Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project aligns with career goals, and I would love to work full-time for a similar organization after graduation. I am living in Eau Claire this summer with my two cats (Skunk and Tucker.)"
Thank you, Noah, and welcome aboard! π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ

Sharon Dixon came to Milwaukee as a teenage runaway. Homeless, jobless, and friendless, she built a life for herself that she never dreamed was possible.
What can we say about Sharon Dixon that we haven't already said?
We'll start with THANK YOU. Thank you for being a defender of gay men and women as a bouncer 55 years ago at the River Queen. Thank you for being a beloved bartender 50 years ago at the Leaded Shade. Thank you for opening Wisconsin's first bar for women by women with the Sugar Shack in 1975, followed up by Fannies. Thank you for creating amazing restaurant spaces, including Mike & Annas and Mom's Kitchen, throughout the 1980s. Thank you for Fannies Fest, which raised critically needed funds for AIDS care at a time when the community had to take care of its own, because NO ONE else would.
Thank you for all of this, and so much more. β€οΈ
In 2017, she agreed -- after a lifetime of saying no -- to be interviewed by OnMilwaukee: https://tinyurl.com/sharondixon26
