NEW PAINTING! I AM NOW DOING PET FACE PORTRAITS FOR $50!

"Perplexed Pup"
2026
Oil on Panel
8 in x 8 in

This pet portrait, (painted on commision for the dog's owner), is a lovely example of the beauty of the everyday and minimalism. The viewer is presented with the face of a white, curly-haired dog in front of a simple, brown background.

My small gestural brushstrokes in this portrait craft a facial expression of vulnerability and confusion. These are all too familiar feelings for anyone alive here at the end of the 21st century's 1st quarter.

* NOTE ABOUT THE PHOTO QUALITY:
Everyday life has been so hectic recently, so please forgive the quality of my less than professional photo documentation.

A more polished photo of "Perplexed Pup" shall be added to my album entitled "Completed Artpieces by Andrew Perry of Andy.M.Paintworks" very soon.

Q: How long have you been at Material Studios + Gallery and how does your studio practice look like?

A: I've had the immeasureable pleasure of being a resident of Material Studios + Gallery since January of 2022. My studio practice is squarely situated near the gallery entrance.
My studio practice is squarely situated near the gallery entrance. It is a narrow room with high walls which I've affectionately named "The Broom Closet." I've arranged the space so it resembles a cozy little sitting room. In said sitting room, are my artworks, my vinyl record player, my DVD & VHS players, and an XBOX 360.

Q: How would you describe your work?

A: I'd describe my work as a kaleidoscope of colors, alien-shapes, and forms inspired by the illustrations in 2000's era biology textbooks. I mix abstraction with a set of semi-representational symbols that I've created to communicate certain ideas to the viewer. I have a tentative deference to traditional models of emotive color symbolism. But I tend to utilize whatever colors best suit my current mood and sometimes that entails using blue to reflect strong emotions rather than the traditional red.

Q: What's your favorite piece of art advice that you've gotten or given?

A: My favorite tidbit of art advice is "Steal Like an Artist", the eponymous central thesis statement of the 2012 book form manifesto of American author and illustrator, Austin Kleon. Quite fittingly, this book's underlying idea of artistic borrowing stems from earlier figures, most famously Pablo Picasso, who stated, "Good artists copy, great artists steal". Kelon's commandment of "Steal Like an Artist" serves as a reminder to me to be mindfully conscientious of how I incorporate influences into my own work.

Q: Whose work are you digging on right now?

A: I'm really digging John Totleben's art from Alan Moore's run on "Swamp Thing" during the mid-1980's (Issues 20-64). I also really like Rick Veitch's art from that period of "Swamp Thing", as well as his incredible illustrations for his 1982 graphic novel, "Abraxas and The Earthman". In the current day, the ongoing comic art of Galavante Gvt (Insta ) has really been an inspiration to me. His comic art has always been influential to my own work because of how it utilizes symbolism and graphic design to convey deeper messages.

Q: Where can we find your work online or in the wild?

A: You can find me online on my Instagram .m.paintworks_brand & my page, Andy.M.Paintworks, where I share event updates and photos finished of ongoing work, or on my website, www.andympaintworks.com where you can see my art portfolio.

"Painting "MEIOSIS" Part 2"

NO AUDIO (sorry)
Filmed in 2021 by Andrew Perry,
Sole Proprietor of Andy.M.Paintworks

Please ignore the KAPWING watermark. The copyright people on Facebook took the original video down because I was singing along to a Dio song. I used KAPWING's free video editor to take out the offending audio that so upset the copyright people and the Facebook algorithm.

I filmed this during the course of my year long residency at Wisconsin Arts Lab over at 1422 N. Vel Phillips
in my very first professional studio space.
